good evening all!!

im taking the big step in the next couple of weeks and im stumped on what beer/style to do for my first attempt.

im interested in what other brewers chose to brew on there first AG batch. why did you choose this beer and how did it turn out??

cheers!

Hi mate,

I did a similar Topic a little bit ago... AG Cherry Popper, 1st AG Brew

Personally I went the whole hog and tried to do a choc raisin Porter, and surprisingly succeded. had a very nice chocolatey raisiny flavour .....mmmmmmm can taste it now. Don't ask me for the recipe though it was a one off and I don't remember it. had like 6 different malts and 4 different hops. The choc raisin taste was from the malt and hops, not from using cocoa or anything.

A lot of people seem to go for Doc Smurto's Golden Ale. I tried someone's attempt at it and it was mighty fine. I'm guessing from the feedback that it's almost foolproof.

Either that or just pick one of your favourite succesful ideas or recipes and convert it to AG. You'll be drinking most of it.

I'm not at that point yet so I can't offer my cherry popper reminiscences.

...!

I started off with an IPA recipe. I'd been doing extract and mini-mash so I was comfortable with recipe design already.
I missed my targets a bit so as an IPA it was a little underwhelming. Very nice beer though.
As an English Pale Ale it got 2nd at AABC 2007 :)

The two types of ale malt are just because I had a 1kg bag of MO to finish. Similarly the 50g of crystal in addition to the main carared addition. The main base malt was Perle.

My first was an english bitter out of Laurie Straun's latest book.

It turned out black as a stout. Both Beersmith and the book said it should've been a pale beer. I've always wondered what happened, but all i could think of was that some portion of grain was wrong in the shop.

Turned out great though, just not what i was expecting.

Cheers,
Al

+1 on what Manticle said, I started on Dr Smurto's earlier this year and haven't looked back.

Did the trick for me. Love the stuff - one of my house favourites.

Hopper.

I made a really simple steam beer, and I *loved* it. Made me do another AG really quick!

G'day,

Mine was a simple APA, when I was mashing in I knocked the copper manifold and I had to reach in with the rubber gloves to reconnect it, it is now known has "Hot Hands Pale Ale" The beer turned out great, it is now my flagship brew.

Cheers

Hawkesy

I can recommend going with the good Doctors GA, you wont go wrong.

But there are so many good ones on this database too...
