Water Filter - Empty It After Brew Day?

One more idea. If it's convenient to do so, just run a litre or so of water through every few days. Surely, this would solve all problems???

(I'm up to 4c now on this thread!)

Roach,
I just bought a 20 metre food grade hose from Bunnings. Was only 20 bucks.
On brewday I just connect it to the pura tap in the kitchen (just pushes on no need for connects) and fill my tanks. I usually do it the night before brewday so as not to disturb the "peace".

cheers
Darren

Darren,
Previously that is what I did - connect up the blue nylex food grade hose directly to my Puratap and fill up the HLT the night b4, but that was in the Kitchen. I just wanted to save my back and more convenient to have a filter on the stand. Will persevere with it and put the filter cartridge in the fridge after use.

Thanks for the extra 2c PP, but not so convenient to pump 2 litres of water into the brew stand every day. So you can have that 2 cents back :p :beerbang:

Pumpy - nice unit those UV steriliser, but think I''ll stop where I am.

Thanks vlbaby the backyard scientist.

cheers

darren,
is that hose you bought ok for full mains pressure. ie could i replace the ordinary garden hose with it.

apologies for the slight hijack

VL.

Darren. I'd anticipate you'd know a lot more than me. However freezing my (carbon pleated) filter doesn't seem to have ruptured any membranes at all thus far.

In fact after thawing and flushing I usually taste a glass of water via the filter and it always seems to be pretty good. :)

I'd say as per usual we're coughing out a bit o' scare-mongering.

End of the day we're talking about a $20 cartridge. Wasting a couple to achieve the best results isn't going to break the bank.

Hey Warren,
I agree, but my cartridge cost me $44 and so is much closer to breaking the bank :D ... must get onto the third batch lauter for the day.

Darren has me scared  , and while I have room in my fermenting chest freezer Ill stick it in there, as opposed to incurring SWMBO wrath.

cheers

Sorry Roach! I was actually thinking you were using an in-line filter connected to a water source but I am slowly realising that you are probably talking about something different that I am totally unaware of! I know nothing about AG setups so ignore all my advice but I still want that 2c back for effort! :p

VL,
Yep you could (should) replace the garder hose with the food grade stuff.
I reckon it will hold mains presure no worries. Was suprisingly cheap too. It is a woven, semi-clear, blue hose I bought.

cheers

Thought I'd revive this thread. I am considering doing some brewing in the future at my parents' vineyard in the Hunter Valley. The water quality is good but I can't be certain of the exact specs (should do a test I suppose). Anyway, will these filters be able to clean the water up completely? So, pretty much pristine water? I don't expect them to take out carbonates etc, but all solids and bacteria?

Also what are the flow rates like on a 0.5 - 1 micron filter. Mains pressure going in, do you get anything like that pressure coming out?

Thanks

TD.

These style of filters take out all the nasties. There is a pressure drop, but not overly huge. My twin filter system I run at about 2-3 litres/min.

As for the previous questiosn, I have the same system as pumpy and I flush the system with 15-20 litres of water the night before brew day (into a bucket for the garden) before filling the HLT.
Works for me.

Beers,
Doc

I would be fairly cautious with this unit Pumpy... I have not found any detailed information on the 'net about it... but compare it with a UV unit from a reputable equipment manufacturer...

http://www.wedecoag.com/UV_Systems_AQUADA.96.0.html

See the Aquada range, and the physical size of the units.... Take a look at the Aquada 1... 35W of power, and nearly 500mm long... still only rated to treat 690 lph which is 11.5 litres/minute. If you have reasonable water pressure, I think you would get around 10-15 litres/minute out of you garden hose, so this unit is perhaps big enough to do the job. That little waterco jobbie... who knows how much power it produces.... or what the contact time is.

Yes, I do this stuff for a living.

dreamboat

EDIT: Just looking at the little tube which feeds this waterco unit... maybe it will give a reasonable contact time on account of the very low flow.

MORE EDIT: I actually have a Waterco book here (information on paper, who would have thought to look there?) and it shows lots more info
UV lamp - 6W
UV output - 1W
UV illumination - 11 uW/cm2
Min Sterilising Capacity - 2 litres/minute (perhaps this should be max??)
40mm x 279mm

however perhaps as Roach should be considering a Solite UV streiliser which sits on top of the undersink water filter to really fix up them bugs and nasties .
