Hey Dr Rummy,

I haven't used the HERM-IT controller, so can't comment on how it functions, but it seems similar. Obvious differences - larger screen, removable power plugs, option to heat 2 elements, open source code can be modified to suit, and the new board has the potential for wireless using the spark core. That said, you have to build it and get an electrician to certify you aren't going to kill yourself or get an electrician to build it. (Seriously, 240v is no joke, be safe). From all reports I've heard that the Herm-IT controller is excellent.

luke - PM me, I've never had an issue with getting up to 100C.

Sorry Lael,

I should clarify, the hermit controller only goes to 99c. You have to offset the temp by a Couple of degrees to maintain a boil. I used to use one for my Braumeiser until I i purchased an actual Braumeister this year.

Unless you offset the temp in parameters this controller only goes to 99c

Ya see, it's like this: next to all that shiny stainless steel the silver cover will blend in quietly, whereas the clear cover - showing off all the underpinnings and their computer-ey glory - will make it look like you own a SPACE SHIP! Doesn't every dude want a SPACE SHIP!!!

Well, that's my argument at least... ;)

Yob may have been onto something ... ;)

ok, I think we've got a statistically meaningful sample on the cover question. I'm going with silver. If you want clear as well, put it in brackets next to your name on the list and I'll see what I can do - it will cost extra, but hopefully not too much. And yes, the silver cover adds extra cost as well (of course), but is worth it. For simplicity it will be included in the kit (ie - non-optional, though you can choose not to use it) and the kit price adjusted to match.

Hey lael,

For the temperature probe that comes with this do you know the temperature range it can handle? Ideally I am looking to use this mostly for brewing but also to attached a small fan and temp control my kamado charcoal BBQ for low and slow cooking like this (provided it can go up to around 110c or more?).

Thanks

Hey slugger,

That looks awesome. The probe is a ds18b20. The kit will have the sure electronics one that comes in a bulkhead. So, it would prob be inconvenient to pull It out of your system. Best is to buy one off eBay with a Cable that is temp resistant. I'm not sure about max temps, it will go up past a hundred, though I think it loses Fine grained accuracy as it goes up past 80. You can just swap out the temp probe at the socket.

Sounds good to me, I'll get a separate probe, easily done, there are lots around from the guys on the BBQ forums building their own DIY pit controller. The accuracy isn't as important for the BBQ cooking provided its within a few degrees give or take.

Thanks for the reply.

If you find something with a high temp cord, I'd love to see it - I've been interested in doing a similar thing.

From a quick look at the one of the DIY pit controllers they use a K-Type Thermocouple. Not sure how / if this would work. The link also shows the type of fan I am looking for (I have bought a Brushless DC Blower Fan 12V on ebay for a few $$$ but I would like to get one already wired so I can plug it in easily to your box when it's ready).
