I got a perfect 26L esky from cash converters today for just $10.

I've heard of people have great success with just the hose on its own and others with springs, copper wire etc in it to prevent the hose crushing and stuck sparges.

Do I really need something when going the braided hose mash screen?

I'm planning on doing a cheap and nasty with it clamped at the end and other other onto tubing using the tap out of the esky. Tubing on the outside clamps onto the other end slightly bigger in diameter. Does this tubing need to be anything other than simply vinyl tubing?

Cheers guys.

I started with small, 1/2 inch hose which collapsed all the time. Got my hands on some 1 inch braid and it works fine, much tougher, no need to re-inforce.

Hello chadjaja,

you dont need anything inside the braided hose. Just remove the inside rubber hose and clamp it to the outlet. The steel is strong enough to withstand the weight of the grain, no worries.

Here a pic of mine, Im using that for many years:

Used a 26L esky for many a brew and had no problems with the stock standard 1/2" household braid (or is 3/8"?).

Never had a stuck sparge even with 5kg+ grain and even unmalted wheat!

yeah no problems here with just braided hose on its own... 12 or so brews with no stuck sparges

Hey Chadjaja,

I haven't got around to drilling my esky and for the last four brews I have just used the braid with the middle removed joined onto a long piece of food grade tube with cable ties. When I am ready to drain the tun I lift the esky up onto a high tabel, put the pot underneath and siphon (with great care). It works a treat, no blockages, no crushed braid. So simple it is ridiculous.

Cheers B)
