So, with the recently build Brauduino I've modified my previous BIAB setup to try and utilise the following

20L Big W pot with false bottom inside a Birko 40L urn, with a pump to recirc

Im hoping for some suggestions on some numbers so I can try and build a beersmith profile to suit.

Anyone with a similar single vessel recirc setup want to weigh in on how much water they mash in/recirc with and how much water they use for sparge?
Previously I was full volume, so about 30ish litres mash in, no sparge and ending up with 21 to 23l into fermenter depending on grain bill.

I'm a month or so away from a similar setup so I can't give definitive help.

As it is I BIAB in a 40L kettle and the only difference I'm expecting when I get a malt pipe w/ recirc is a reduction in trub. I currently lose about 3L and am expecting that to drop to 1L at the most.

Currently I mash in with 30L of water and sparge with the same mass of grain (e.g. 5L sparge with a 5kg grain bill) to get pre-boil volume of 30L. This leaves me with about 22L into the fermenter.

I'm expecting that I will either keep doing the same and collect 24L of wort or I will sparge with grain weight - 2L (3L for 5kg grain bill).

Good luck with your new system. I think your best bet will be to make some guesses around boil off, loss to trub/deadspace and grain absorption and see how you go.

What are the dimensions of the system SBOB?

Lael
Birko urn internal dimensions are 42cm high, 35cm diameter
Big W pot is the normal 19L pot, but I haven't got the measurements for that on hand

ended up mashing in with 27.5L and sparging with ~5L
Used beermsiths default efficiency calcs of 72% and hit them so no complaints there.
Hit most of the numbers but lost a bit more than expected due to not accounting for losses in plate chiller and hoses with the recirc setup i had running (about 19L into fermenter instead of 21-22L)

Not bad for a first attempt and 0 issues with drainage with the pot with false bottom
Big holes in the base of the pot, with a 25cm false bottom and a relatively coarse crush
