I have come across the Daleside Ripon Jewel and it really floats my boat. As far as I know it is an English Strong Ale so does it fit into 19 Strong Ale / 19A Old Ale?
Are there better examples of this style found in Dan Murphys or other specialist beer stores? I notice on websites that this beer is not really rated highly.
And then the obvious question is about making an all grain version - how do I go about making a luscious ~6% amber ale ??

Sounds more like an ESB to me, all be it one with a Yorkshire twist, If you look at the BJCP style guide for ESB there are a couple of cracking good beers in the examples, recipes for which are very available, I think I would start with something like the Fullers ESB in of Graham Wheelers books, maybe look at using Challenger late and possibly Styrian Golding for bittering - should give you a fairly good starting place.

Just had a glance at "The Real Almanac" by Roger Protz, the brewer gets a mention but not the beer, the one that does is made from (Monkman's Slaughter) Pale Malt, Crystal, Challenger and Golding - but that's the recipe for about 90% of the UK's Pale Ales.
