Yeah, that is sad news.
I think it was the Beer Hunter series many years ago that inspired me to learn about beer.
And for those that dont know about Michael, he was the real Michael Jackson.
Cheers

In some ways a shock, in other ways inevietable considering Parkinsons was getting the better of him judging by some of his last public engagements.

I myself will be raising a few glasses to him tonight.

Beers,
Doc

My thoughts go out to his friend's and family! No doubt he is going to be missed considerably!!

Michael's writing has been an instrumental influence in my passion also and without his books I would not have developed my passion as great as I have done.

Others may not know but he also wrote several books and was heavily involved within the whisky industry too.

I dedicate my career choice and passion to a fellow "Malt Addict"

Cheers Michael

I read the article but it didn't say how old he was, does anyone know? And what was his doctorate in?

I loved the Beer Hunter series and watched it religiously when we had pay tv a few years back.

His dedication and knowledge was awe inspiring years ago when beer knowledge was not considered important, and megaswill ruled the UK, before CAMRA became active.

RIP the real Michael Jackson indeed.

I was fortunate enough to meet him at last year's GBBF & have a short chat. His parting will be a great loss to the beer community & my heart goes out to his friends & family...may he rest in peace.

Cheers Ross

Oh no. :(

I briefly met him too in 2001 at a book signing at Bell's Hotel in Sth. Melbourne. Just a nice little bloke who was basically a case of what you see is what you get.

He'll be sadly missed. I loved the way he balanced a beer in one hand and constantly scribbled on a notepad with the other.

Warren -

I haven't read much of his writing, but what I have is always amusing and knowledgeable. Allaboutbeer have his last article here. Kind of his own self-obituary. Hopefully he's getting offered better than Miller.

R.I.P

:lighter:

Tonight me and the boys will put a good dent in a tettnang lager in the name of Michael!

May he rest in peace and I will enjoy a few in memory tonight.

Big loss to the world of beer, i will definately end my AFW tonight and raise a few Phat pints in his direction.

Indeed, a big loss for the world of beer. :(

He will be sadly missed. He definitely kindled the passion for many of us, and indirectly, all of us. RIP, Michael.

I spent a couple of days (and dinners) with Michael Jackson when Coopers brought him out to do some stuff and attend the AIBA about ten years ago. He was a nice bloke if not slightly seemingly sozzled all the time. I gave him a sample of a brew that I had done - poor man - it was a malt extract lambic!! In truth it was probably really awful but he sampled it with complete sincerity and professionalism and gave me a critic that made me feel like brewing more beer and one day getting it right. He was generous, passionate and interested. We spoke also about his TV series the Beer Hunter and how whilst it was very succesful the BBC wouldnt comission another series - bloody TV networks!!

A friend from the Sebel Brewing institute sent me the below.

RIP MJ - I will be raising a full glass to you and lowering an empty one.

From Julie Bradford at All About Beer:

We learned this morning that Michael Jackson died last night at his
home in London. We're feeling stunned, and know his many friends will,
too. We are both devestated and saddened since he was a friend, a
mentor and one of our favorite writers. We talked with his staff and
his death appears to have been peaceful. You may also know of the
extent of his illness which he had begun discussing publicly in the past
several months. Ironically, we were just editing his most recent column
for All About Beer, which, poignantly, concerned his having "cheated
Mort Subite" this year.

We are preparing a memorial for Michael on our website, to be
echoed in the pages of the magazine that is in production. In a few
hours we will publish his final column, along with his first column from
1984, on our website and open a memorial page where his friends can
share their thoughts and stories. We will capture some some of these
memories in print.

We're sure we speak for all of you when we say our community has
lost a good friend and champion. He gave beer a language and taught so
many of us to speak it.

He'll be sorely missed.
