Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me how much grain I would need to mash to equate to 1kg of dried malt extract?

Cheers Matt

Running it through BrewMate and using the values in the supplied database from BrewMate: 1.6 kg of a typical pale base malt such as Maris Otter.

Great thanks Bribie so can I assume that ale malt would be roughly the same ratio?

Yup, some spec malts might be different but you wouldn't want to be using a kilo of them anyway.

The answer is that it depends - What mash efficiency are you expecting? What gravity will that give? What gravity does 1 kg of malt extract give per kilo of water? How much malted grain in proportion would you then need?

If it were me though, I would take just Bribie's suggestion as a rule of thumb and account for discrepancies when brewing the next one.
