Hi all, just wanted to know your thoughts on this. Wanted to brew something my own, not just everyone else's recipe.

I wanted a beer easy to drink not to heavy, i guess a summer kind of beer, balanced with the bitterness though tasty as well.

Using 1056

Would this give me what im after? Any thoughts welcome.

Shane

If it was me what i would do is make it a lot easier. For example i am just starting out to make my own recipes, and i find it better to use one kind of hop to get the taste of that style of hop. For me a easy summer beer would be =

Pale Malt 4.5 kg
Rice 0.5 kg

Northern Brewer 13g FWH

And your 1056.

you would be surprised at how tasty it is.

Ps: i think i stole that recipe from someone on here, so it isn't my own.

The E.K.Goldings looks out of place to me.

I suggest replacing it with the same IBU of Centennial or Chinook. Centennial probably a bit smoother, so that's probably the better choice. However, if you want a bit more hop bite, then Chinook is the go.

Looks interesting from the malt bill.

My thoughts as well re the Goldings. I'd go for something neutral for Bittering such as Chinook or Magnum, would not put the Chinook in later as it's principally a bitterer. Then move the Centennial and the Cascade to later in the boil (10 mins, flamout, dry hop etc) and don't do the 20 min addition.

I wonder if the thought behind the East Kent Goldings is taken from the Little Creatures Pale Ale recipe that Argon posted in the recipe DB...

The hop schedule looks similar to me... yum :chug:

Chinook works fine late to my palate but in small amounts. I'd just go centennial and chinook - leave the goldings for another beer.

Otherwise recipe looks tasty. I usually use around 2-200g biscuit but that's not a hard and fast rule - just my standard addition that gives me the nutty character I'm chasing. Interested to hear how a larger amount goes.

With the East Kent i know Argon uses it in as his biterness hop and that is why i thought of using it there as i did read somethere that it creats a less harsh biterness thats the only reason i thought to use the EKG

It's a lovely hop no doubt. I'm a fan of it in all areas of the right beer. Personally I only ever use a hop that has a place in that specific beer (which is not to say that a US hop may not mix beautifully with some US hops)

Point taken re the EKG using in the right kind of bear. I think i may just drop the biscuit a little to 300g.
Backed off on the Chinook later in the boil as well
Other that that is the below worth giving a go.

Thanks all

In my opinion keep it Cascade and Chinook only. Ditch both the Centennial and the EKG I reckon.

Yes EKG is used as a kettle addition by Little Creatures in the Pale, reputably because it creates a smoother bitterness. However Ive done many batches both with and without the EKG addition and I cant really note the difference, considering its a 60 min addition in a 40+IBU beer. I have one fermenting now that took up the IBUs at 60 using Chinook and last sample came out fine, not harsh at all. To be honest I dont get any harshness from Chinook, I love it. Try a Mikeller Single Hop IPA Chinook version at 100IBU comes out beautifully smooth.

Also my experience with Centennial is that it will stomp all over the Cascade, not letting it through it is known as Super Cascade after all.

The pairing of Centennial and Chinook is also a good suggestion and will give you a very bold hop profile would come out really nice. However, for me, Id use a combo of Cascade and Chinook only. It will give you some nice resiny/piney/grapefruit flavours and aromas. Very refreshing combo for an APA. Add some dry hops while youre at it too. Say total of 1g\L of Cascade and Chinook. :icon_drool2:

On the grain bill it all looks good and the biscuit should add a nice dimension too.

Good luck with it... now you're starting to look at your own recipes... there's a world of variables to experiment with.
Cheers :icon_cheers:

So do you feel its better to replace the centennial with chinook for the 60min addition.

For me... i'd drop the Centennial all together and use the Chinook at 60 for the IBU

Thanks all for your thoughts.
Below is what where it stands now.

Two Wyermann Wheat malts in your grist?....for a total of 2.5kg.

Probably just a typo but I'm just bringing it to your attention.

Save me a bottle...this looks yum :-D

To make it even simpler beer, drop the Bohemin Pilsener malt and use Barret Pale in its place. Keep the Wyermann Pilsener malt for your next lager beer. No need for the two different pale malts IMO but either with give you similar results.

Looks good other than that.

Cheers,

TS

Bribie, Chinook is an excellent flavour hop mate.
