Hey guys,

I'm ordering parts for my first electric kettle BIAB setup. The 50L stock pot is on it's way and now i'm just looking for an appropriate element.

I've found this one http://www.stoveconnection.com.au/shop/ind...s/kz24hq00.html which is isanely cheap compared to most out there. Has anyone had experience with this particular element?

Also a more general question, since it's so long (44cm) would it be feasible to put a couple of bends into it to give it an S shape which would pull it's length back to fit in the pot (around 42cm wide). I hear elements can be bent, but I just wanted to make sure if I need specialized equipment to do it.

My other option is this one http://www.australianelementsupplies.com.a...P-SCREW-IN-1888 A bit more $$ but already bent.

Thanks,
Impy

I would go your second option. I would not try to bend an element unless it is specified that it can be bent ( I know some types are) For 18 bucks it would not be worth the risk

Cheers

The $8 Kmart kettle elements are apparently quite good. Small enough to fit 2 in the bottom of the pot.

Just out of interest, where did you order your pot?

The uxcell seem to be the pick of value for money elements at the moment. I did put a small bend into 2 of mine and they still work ok, but I wouldn't like to try a big angle. Here is some info on Keg king elements, I would not touch them. The ones you have found both seem like good elements, I would pay the extra for the pre bent one to save a possible headache. I would not use a kettle element for wort, I think they are great for contact with fresh water only like a HLT or HERMS but too high of a heat density for wort.

i have your 2nd option element and am happy with it so far (1 brew)
they also have a 3600w but i am yet to test the one i have
if you ask nice they should give yo a cheaper price than the online of $43 i paid about $30 plus shipping from them and $33 ish for the 3600w

whats the quality like on your pot

OK! So I'm a loose cannon so I've gone ahead and bought the 44cm 2400Watt element and I'm planning on bending it.

All up it cost $36 and arrive 17hrs after I clicked "purchase" (the shop is 18km from my house). From a quick inspection of the element this morning it certainly looks like it's bendable as it's not perfectly straight even now.

The method I'll be using to bend it is this http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-ben...?ALLSTEPS#step1 which is creating a basic rig to guide the bend along the length of the metal.

It's certainly a risky option, but I thought it would be better if I could do it and succeed and give us another source of cheap elements for our brewing.

I'll post back with results and instructions if it ends up being the holy grail of cheap brewing elements.
