Hoppy American Pale Ale
Would this work as a recipe? This is my first attemp at deriving a recipe

1.7 kg LME unhopped can
0.3 Wheat at 1.77 Lovibond
0.3 kg Crystal Malt at 45 Lovibond (can this be mashed?)
0.5 kg Munich malt at 8 Lovibond
1.4 kg two row pale malt at 3 lovibond
FG 1.056

Mash (2L per kg)- 67C sacch rest @70mins, 77C Mash out @15min and sparge with 80C water

Hops
0.01 kg Chinook (13%AA) 60mins
0.01 kg Cascade (5.9%AA) 30mins
0.03 kg Splat (4.5%AA) 15mins
0.03 kg Cascade (5.9%AA) 5mins
IBU 48.7
WYeast#2112@18C
Any suggestions?

Cheers

to me that looks like a high OG for that recipe. how did you work it out?
my partials are similar (1.7kg LME + 2.5-3kg of grain) & i generally get an OG around 1.048-50.
also are you planning on adding the LME to the boil or at the end of the boil? i find it much easier to add post boil.. saves on hops too.
if you can i'd suggest upping the pale malt up to 2kg (& maybe lose the wheat - but thats just me.. no big deal leaving it in) & up the mash water to around 3l per kg.

Grain bill looks good to me. :super:

With the hops, you are probably better off using grams rather than kg. If Splat is Spalt ;) , this is a German hop and you'd be better off sticking with American hops exclusively. I've just run the recipe through Promash and I think your IBU calculations are not quite right. I get 33IBUs and I doubt that any formula would get you to 48IBUs from those ingredients.

Changed the Hops to
0.02 Northern Brewer (7.5%AA) 45mins
0.01 kg Cascade (5.9%AA) 30mins
0.01 kg Splat (4.5%AA) 10mins
0.01 kg Cascade (5.9%AA) 5mins
IBU 43.7
plus 0.02 kg of Amarillo in secondary

cheers

I agree with beers re the gravity. That assumes a pretty good efficiency for 23litres. How many litres are you planning on?

Also agree re the mash water, 2.5-3litres per kg is probably easier to work with.

hugh - if youve got some amarillo, i'd be swapping the spalt with that for sure and use the Chinook instead of Northern Brewer. Why W2112? I'd be going with good ole US56 dry yeast.
Cheers
Steve

I'm with Stuster on the hops, change the spalt to cascade and keep them at the original amounts. This should get you to about 45 IBUS and 20g of amarillo in secondary will be very nice :beerbang:

20g Northern Brewer @ 60min
30g Cascade @ 20min
30g Cascade @ 10min
30g Cascade @ 5min

Beers
I wanted the wheat to get better head retention. Is this a good assumption??

Grams are much easier hughyg. Still only get 34IBU from that. Agree with Steve re the hops and the yeast. Why not try Promash or Beersmith programs. Both have free trials and will help you work out the recipe. Much quicker and more accurate than paper and pencil.

Whoops Steve I meant wyeast#1272
And others I was looking at 75% efficiency for grain bill. Should this prehaps be lower?
JYE OK ive made those changes to hops

75% is probably a bit optimistic for your first partial. Like the look of Jye's hop bill. With 62% efficiency, you'll get 1050 OG with 48IBUs. Nice and hoppy. Go for it.

1272 should be good.

Here it is then

1.7 kg LME unhopped can
0.3 Wheat at 1.77 Lovibond
0.3 kg Crystal Malt at 45 Lovibond (can this be mashed?)
0.5 kg Munich malt at 8 Lovibond
2 kg two row pale malt at 3 lovibond
og 1.057 at 62% eff

(ps not my first partial, just the first recipe ive tried to make as oppossed to be given one by the lhbs)

20g Northern Brewer @ 60min
30g Cascade @ 20min
30g Cascade @ 10min
30g Cascade @ 5min
20g Amarillo dry hop into secondary
45IBU

Cheers for all the help guys
Hugh

trying my first partial this weekend,
that was exactly the kind of info I was looking for, regarding water volumes/og etc.

once again this forum comes through, thanks!

good luck with that recipe hughyg, its making me damn thirsty just thinking about it.

[post="124539"][/post]

Yeah thats correct. I used to use 150-200g in all of my brews myself but gave up awhile ago (when i was trying to get rid of chill haze) & I found the head retention to be fine with out it. Now I just don't bother :)

Your final recipe looks good to me.. 62% efficency is probably a good assumption. Good luck with it & let us know how you go with it.

I'm actually brewing an APA (all centennial) this weekend  aiming for something a little lighter than yours.
