Hi All,
My Copper Coil is locked in a mates garage, he is in Bali at the moment so I cant get to it.
I want to "no chill" my brew but only have a 30L fermenter. Is there going to be too much surface area to do this or should I top it off with some CO2 to stop oxidation? Will this effect the yeast when pitched?

Thanks

The Easter Bunny

A few people go straight to the fermenter and report no problems. Do you have a cube?

Cheers
Gavo.

A shot of CO2 would be of benefit.

Ideally you would want to use a cube, however if you only have a fermentor, then that is what is has to be.

Be aware as the wort cools it will want to draw in air as its volume reduces. Maybe a santised soaked tea towel over the fermentor lid to reduce chances of nasties getting in...

I would get a starter happening right now so you can pitch ASAP once it has cooled down enough, as there will be airborn yeasties floating about, and the albeit minor risk of infection.

2c.

No Cube, normally use a chiller so all i have is 30L screw lid fermenters.

You could put it in the fermenter then put an airlock on with just enough sanitised water in it so it can draw in the air but no water from the airlock.

If your standard sanitation methods are up to scratch then just throw it in the fermenter and place some glad rap over it
Just dont sneeze over it or let your sons grubby hands in there :p

Thanks for that guys,
I think I will flood the fermenter with co2 the pop on the lid with the airlock in and keep my kids away from it.

As stated by others, if you don't have a cube to use, then pitch as soon as you can in the fermenter to reduce the chance of infection. It may even be beneficial to put the fermenter in the laundry tub and surround it with cold water to help bring the temperature down, although it may be cold enough to pitch now given your last message was yesterday.

cheers,

Crundle

Or just unclench your asscheeks to release the $15 odd required to buy a cube. Then when you get your chiller back and can do things properly, you'll have something to cold condition with :)

Have you brewed yet? I'm a no chiller but being also an arse-clencher :p my cube is a 20 L job and really doesn't cut the mustard for a 24 L brew. What I do is to brew a bit overgravity (4kg instead of 3.5... you get the idea), chill in cube which actually holds around 22 litres, next day it's still up around the 30 degree mark here at the moment. Then I dump half a bag of party drinking quality ice into the 30 L fermenter and pour cube in: ideal pitching temp and 24L of wort (a bag of ice is 4L).

Suggest brew strong, if you have the ingredients, no chill in fermenter and apply ice tomorrow. Shot of CO2 sounds the go as well.

No problems with infections from the ice Bribie? I wouldn't think that it was sterilised before it was frozen?

Supercheap auto had a 20% off sale here but dont know if its on everywhere. I picked up 4 20L jerrys for $14 each. They hold around 22L
