I just did one. Noice, eh bro.

15L
1kg wheat malt
2kg ale malt
500g dex
30g grated ginger
1tsp nutmeg
mashed @ 64
25g Pac Jade for 50min
15g Nelson Sauvin dry at day three
S04 @ 20C

Matt from their web site "Monteiths Summer Ale is a bright gold beer with great body from four different malts. Spiced with a single hop variety and a touch of history a little Rata honey. Subtle, but enough to make all the difference. The result is a truly refreshing herbal spiced beer brewed for the Summer Season a splendid thirst quencher" and "Monteiths Summer Ale has an Original Gravity (OG) of 1048 alcohol of 5.0% and a final gravity of 1009+. This combination provides a smoothness from the combination of specialty malts and rata honey.."

Four Malts? Pilsner as a base, light crystal for colour and flavour, wheat? cara amber or light Munich

Hop, it would have to be an Nz (I dont think I have tasted this beer so I cannot comment) any one? Nelson Sauvin?

Mash low 62c ish

Yeast would be larger yeast I assume

I am sure one of the more experienced brewers will have some input.

Bump it up the to do list, we probably have the majority of ingredients

At what stage would you add the Dex, Ginger and nutmeg Nick?
Got me interested now...

Boil.

Monteith's Summer Ale tastes like ginger beer. Mine is intended to be an "improvement" :p .

The Monteith's stuff I can't taste virtually anything but the ginger. Their blurb should read, "A fine blend of four malts and freah hops with rata honey completely smothered to death with ginger until you'd swear it was a bundy ginger ale shandy with Coopers PA!"

I used too much Nelson. It actually overpowered the ginger. It's POWERFUL STUFF!

Nick,

I have to say I really like the Monteiths Summer Ale (regular roadie stop purchase on way home from work, along with their Winter ale, and others ) and any sort of ginger beer. Maybe the 15 years of smokin Marlboro have destroyed my palate but I can't taste any ginger in this one at all I'd say its like a dryer spiced version of JS Golden ale.

Your ginger and nutmeg additions sound great, in fact i'll be using that with the next JS golden extract version I do.

Mick

I think so.

The ginger is very prevalent followed by a small hit of honey. Myself I'm not a fan (I like their black and celtic red though) but good luck in your clone quest.

Anybody help with converting this to an extract or kit based recipe?

Use a plain kit like a blonde and 500g or so of light dried malt, then the rest of the ingredients

...extract or kit based recipe?

Whenever you see an AG recipe you can convert it into an extract recipe by substituting 1000g of "base malt" in the AG recipe for roughly 600g of LDME in an extract recipe.
