Would welding be an option?
May cost a few dollars, unless you know someone, but I would think a better result.

I would get it welded. It will still work out cheaper than a new kettle and safer than plugging a hole with chemicals.
 
+1 on the silicone baking tray washer. That is what I have used for a few years, and they are still holding well.
