Is it OK to use Iodophor as a sanitizer for glass bottles and for crown seals? I am about to bottle a brew and have some Iodophor that i bought the other day at LHBS. Have read heaps here on forum about using it but no real mention of using it for glass bottles and crown seals. Would it affect the beer?

Should be fine to use as long as it is diluted to appropriate levels.

I'm not sure what those levels are as I don't use iodophor. A search for iodophor will probably bring up a lot of references. There was quite a long thread on it a little while ago.

It's perfect to use when bottling, bridgee. No need to rinse, just let the drain well. If you have a bottle tree, use that. I just use a metal draining board, sprayed with iodophor. Rinse bottles with iodophor, let them drain for 5 minutes, in crates, ready to bottle. Easy. :)

Thanks Stuster, I have one of those bottle rinsers that you put your sanitiser in and squirt into bottle and then drain on bottle tree. Would be lost without the trusty bottle tree. I noticed the iodophor foamed up a little when i was rinsing the bottles with it though, is this normal? I diluted as per the directions on label at 10ml per 10L. Also is it advisable to spray a little of this into the outlet of fermenter tap before putting in the "little bottler", i worry about the little bit of wort that gets left behind when you take a hydrometer sample could cause infected beer going into every bottle, or am i being too fussy. One last question, does anyone bother to sanitize their priming sugar measurer?

Foaming is normal, nothing to worry about. Your dilution rate is spot on.

Do spray in the fermenter tap before using it. Not being fussy at all, definitely good practice when taking hydro readings. I probably would sanitise the sugar measurer, but you'd need to make sure it's really dry before use so if you're just about to bottle, skip it.

One little tip about bottling. I find it's much easier to put a length of hose (sanitised) on the end of the tap, then the little bottler on the end of the hose. You can then keep the bottles on the floor or a low table and move the bottler rather than the bottles. Fill them all, then cap them all. Definitely a time saver for me. :D

No probs thanks again Stuster, will try that next time i bottle. Have you heard of a cleaning/sanitizing product called sterophos? It was recommended by LBHS to soak fermenters, bottles and equip, but was told it was also a sanitizer.

Never heard of it I'm afraid, bridgee. I use napisan (unscented) for soaking fermenters etc. Works a treat.

It's a pink powdery stuff. I used it as recommened by LHBS as a sanitizer and ended up with my first two undrinkable infected brews in four years, not happy jan. Will not use again and will never listen to LHBS again. I am thinking about getting some starsan to try, seems like it is the go.

:pSearch a topic titled "Scared of iodophor" id put a link up but i dont know how to and couldnt be bothered learning at this hour!
