Hey all, so im about to rack my first AG BIAB lager to secondary and just thought about keeping the yeast as a starter for next weeks brew.

What's the best way to do this?

From what i've so far read i just pour the sludge from my fermenter into a PET bottle and leave in the fridge (it almost seems too simple?

I think this works for a short period, i.e 1 to 2 weeks but otherwise you need to do a little more work ? I think, I am about to do my first BIAB and one of the yeasts is $16 so I want to figure out how to save the yeasts.

i dont know if it is the right or wrong way but i have made 2x stir plates (work with computers so cost was close to nil) and have 2x flasks etc when making my starter for a yeast i want to keep i just pour half into one flask and half into another

once it is done i chill so the yeast clumps at the bottom
decant most of the liquid and bottle+cap the slurry. havent had a problem for 6+ month old yeasties

How old are those coopers bottles when the yeast is harvested? I can say with no doubt that they are at least two weeks old...

hey hey

Chiller has a great method for re-using yeast, takes a little time to do but cuts back on the costs of brewing by making your yeast go further then the jar of sludge. You get a few samples out of it and they can be kept for a recommended 12 months in the fridge. Sanitisation is the key!

This thread is a great guide:
