Have considered the conversion to a refractometer, but really don't see $75 value in it.

Wait until you start all grain brewing. A refractometer is indispensable.

Beers,
Doc

I haven't broken it - I just can't find the bloody thing.

Maybe it went to the tip on the weekend with the old PET bottles ?

Every year at the nationals, maybe a virgin hydrometer should be sacrificed to appease the beer gods.

And every new fermenter should be christened by smashing a hydro on the side.

I am all for it, keep breaking them boys. Thanks Doc, Janelle will name our new extension "The Robinson Wing"
Thanks Again guys
Gerard

As I posted before I still have my original one
22 years old I believe , just packed it for the trip to Qld. if it makes it in one piece....I'll mount it on a board , or smash it ot the beer gods

It's high time you all upgraded to a refractometer, the benefits are enormous and you will soon find the device indispensible.

You saying some of us don't own a refractometer Thomas?

Batz

right on Thomas, refractometers are so easy and quick.
I've made a few starters last week and used it to check the gravity. It's just so quick, easy and doesn't waste any wort.
:) Thanks again for that bulk order Batz

22 years...?
22 years!!!

I'd get it framed and mounted (maybe not in that order).
It's obviously a warrior and should not be sacrificed, having survived thus far.

Seth :p

Things must happen for a reason.

The kids were playing 'sword fights' in the back yard for a good 20 mins one day.
They were getting a bit rowdy so I went out and discovered they had found 2 really cool glass swords with numbers and lines on them.
Snatched them back and promptly tripped up the back step - smash.

A few days later I found one I lost 10 yrs ago moving house - it was 6 yrs old at the time I lost it. 16 yrs old and still going strong - dropped it twice onto kitchen (vinyl) floor since then and it bounced both times - not a scratch.

The kiss of death happens when you buy a spare. :D

No, the kiss of death is when you look at hydrometers in the brew shop and think "nah, don't need another". Then you brew and break the one you have and the brew shop has just shut :(

Bugger,

I was only thinking about this thread this afternoon as I checking my OG and how lucky I seem to be by not busting one.

Now, after cleaning and leaving in my draining rack beside the sink, a stray hand and, crack. Pieces of my hydrometer all over the kitchen floor...

Lucky I still have one left for brewday tomorrow, and will tread very carefully with it.

Mine wasn't a hydrometer, but I managed to bust my thermometer today  Like Duff I'd been reading this thread thinking how lucky I'd been and then... bugger! Rolled off the top of my mash tun lid and onto the concrete... All thanks to Keith from the local HBS for providing an emergency new one above and beyond the call of duty :) Hope this is a good English IPA now...

Shawn.
