So... Where is a good place to get some hot wort storage containers? Are the normal plastic water jerry's good for the higher temps? If they are I'll get some from Bunnings one day soon.

Try your HBS & you may score an empty 25 litre Iodophor or Caustic drum. Just give them a rinse with cold water. I used to put a heap of empty caustic drums out the back at Paddy's & they always found a new life as a storage cube in someones brew shed.

kMart

15 and 25 liter ones for $15 and $20 respecivly

cheers

I was expecting the sides of the Polypropelene cube to suck in like the ESB fresh wort, but this is a better quality cube than the ESB ,( dont know about the wortr ) he he actually its similar to a 'Theakstons old Peculiar' recipe .

Pumpy :)

Pj if you can get rid of the Pine smell

Pumpy

Thanks Pumpy
Got 8 last week..free...Mix of cleaning and wash n wax for cars...
Our local detergent store here sells them 3 for $5.00
BUT ....Did not know if they are all right for beer...
Food grade..???????????

If it is a transluscent container not coloured it should be OK

Give it a good soak in 'Napisan Oxy action' it is Sodium Percarbonate for a day and then rinse .

The Pine smell should be gone.

Poppa Joe - I have only used drums that have previously had chemical that are used in brewing such as Caustic, Peracitic & Iodophor. Its just a simple rinse with water.
Pumpy - The reason the ESB kits look like the walls are sucked in is because when they are filled they lean on them to make sure all the air is pushed out!

Hi all,
This thread has generated some interest with me so yesterday ( Sunday ) I decided to give this hot wort storage a try as I was doing a brew anyway.
I hadn't made a yeast starter so I thought by doing it this way I could take a sample of wort, cool it, and make a starter that I could pitch today.
When the boil was finished (1.30pm) I pumped the hot wort into a 60 litre fermenter put the lid on and stuck it in the big fridge.
I checked it this morning and it was down to 14 deg c.
I removed it from the fridge and left it sit all day in the shed and by 5 pm this arvo it was 18 deg c.
I racked it into a clean fermenter and pitched the yeast.
There was a heap of hot break material left in the bottom of the storage fermenter.
When I went to clean the fermenter that stored the hot wort I found that now it has a slight brown stain that I can not remove.
The stain is on the surface that has had contact with the hot wort.
I dont think that this will cause a problem with the fermenter but I might consider having a separate container just for this purpose.
Maybe a keg would be good!
I can see some advantages in using this method.
I will see how the beer comes out and if all is good I will give it some fine tuning and try it again.
Cheers

Ok, Gerard mine spilled out of the top, so should be OK this is going to be a great idea if it works I can brew when I have the time and ferment when I want :)

Thanks Pumpy Gerard

Dunno what i got them for..was gunna cut the tops off.Dont do AG.

Well I have no room in the Fermentation fridge so todays wort I used Rays " No Chiller method " and packed the batch in the poly containers at 90C , for it to cool down at room temperature , and then ferment next week ,when I will not have enough time to Mash ,but, enough time to start the fermentation and the fermentation fridge will be free.

If Rays idea works it will mean a great deal of flexibilty when I can mash and build a little stockand ferment .

There were no issues packing the hot wort .

Just an update really ,It was the 19th March sixteen days ago  when I did this batch the 'No chiller method' and last night I placed in the fermenter it smelt great nice and clear wort used a SAfale S04 and 24 hours later it has a a nice thick creamy top to it . :)

I must say I am very happy ,I know it is going to taste good

Love to know how yours turn out pumpy :) my first [no chill] is chilling ready to gas, and two in prime, I will let everyone know how it goes :p so far so good , looks and smells great.

good to hear pumpy, you've convinced me...

Quick Question on this, can I place my 20 litre brew into a 25 litre cube and will this be fine?

I think we are going to be alright Bindi .

Slugger ,In conversation wiith Ray Mills he said there is no worries about having a sizable air gap it makes no difference , I have not tried it myself I tried to do similar tto the fresh wort kits and leave little airspace.

Like someone suggested it is not disimilar to bottleing fruit like the great grandma used to do

Pumpy

5 litres of head space would be nasty, with that much head space i'd want to pitch at least the next day. You really want a cube full to the brim with no space left.

stronger than death

I reckon you can, but to be safe, kneel on it as you are tightening the cap, and turn it into a 20 l cube.

Pumpy,
Did you taste the wort before pitching?

cheers
Darren

Darren ,

I confess to not tasting the wort before fermenting, but there was no smell of cabbages, some said there may be .
