Okay here's my next IT problem I was hoping one of you homebrew IT gurus might be able to help me with..

Ive just tried setting up my win 7 pc with my xp laptop on a network.
Ive set sharing on my media drives on the win7 pc which includes two internal drives F and E and an external drive G.

However the only drive I can access from my XP laptop on the Win7 PC is the external G drive and the users folder.

There is no id or password to log into the Win7 PC, only the Xp laptop has a user id and password to log in. And the Win7 pc has the work network setup so Im not using the win7 to win7 network sharing feature.

When I try to access any other shared folders on the win7 PC I get the standard \\ \\ is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource...

My network settings must be setup properly if I can access the G drive and the users folder, so what am I missing here?

There is no id or password to log into the Win7 PC

Yes there is. It's probably being hidden from you - but there is definitely an "Administrator" user, with a password. This is what you need to use on the XP client to connect to your shared resources.

Open the properties panel of one of the drives you're trying to share (you'll need to do this separately for each one). The "Sharing" tab will probably be okay already if you've told Win7 to share them previously. The "Security" tab will list the users allowed to connect. Couple of options here: either have a look at the users already there, and use that info to connect with the xp machine. A more brute force approach would be to click the "Edit..." button and add permissions for "Everyone".

Not sure if I've ever done this, but the first thing I'd try is adding a user on the Windows 7 machine with the exact same username and password as the XP machine. Then give it the correct access to the folders.

Truman I want to help, as this is a forum but have you actually done any research on the web before just posting here? Yes I know, it sounds like Silo Ted but I get the feeling you just want the answers handed to you on a platter sometimes instead of doing the work yourself.

With that said, do you have a firewall or antivirus software on either machine ? Try disabling these as a test to see if it resolves the issue. Do you have any other PC's with which you can test?

Machines that are confirmed to have no trouble with sharing files.

Alternatively, make sure that file and printer sharing is enabled for each network card.

Go start->run->ncpa.cpl and click ok.

Go into the properties of your wired or wireless network connection and ensure that File and Printer sharing shows up in the list. If it is, make sure it's enabled by having the checkbox ticked. If it's not there, click on install and follow the prompts. Good luck!

Cheers,

Clint

Ive already setup full read write permissions for everyone but it didnt fix the problem.

Mate ive searched extensively on the net and tried many different options suggested including the link that Flash_DG suggested but still no luck. I have file and printer sharing setup already, and I should add that I can print from another XP PC to the printer connected to the Win7 Pc no problems.

I've also disabled the firewall and anti virus whilst testing this with no luck.

My wifes laptop running XP can connect to my XP laptop and visa versa, its just the Win 7 machines internal drives that we cant access from another computer. But like I said we CAN access the external G drive and the users folder on the WIn 7 PC so Im guessing its not a problem with the network settings but more so the E and F drives settings that is stopping me from accessing them.
I just don't know what as they are setup exactly the same as the G drive with full read/write permission for everyone.

Heres a post I found below the links that Flash_DG posted, with my exact same problem

I followed this, worked for Printer Share but Folder share is not as clear if its not the Public folder your trying to share. I was trying to share my music folder on a secondary HDD with my XP machine. You have to add Everyone to the Choose People to Share With dialog in a folders sharing properties. My Xp machine could see the share but not access it until I added this.

This is exactly what I did but still no joy.

Try right clicking on the drive and hit properties, click on security. Check that the everyone group has the following permissions:

list folder contents,read and execute,read.

You might need to click on advanced then click on change permissions and select the box to propagate permissions to child objects. Let me know!

Also, what happens if you browse via UNC on the local machine? Do you see the shares coming up?

I think Ive already done this but will double check when I get home tonight.

Will try this tonight as well, Thanks heaps.

I think I had this problem, and realised that it was down to the new security policies/structures that Windows7 has compared to XP. I think that XP will only be able to see the public drives/folders on the Windows7 PC, and no amount of option clicking in 'Sharing' will work. If you want true sharing, then you'll need to configure a Homegroup, but this only works between Windows7 machines.

You might be best upgrading to Windows7 :)

*Disclaimer: Im not a Windows engineer. I've just been there, man, I've got the thousand mile stare.

It's all there in those links I posted.
If it's still not working you should really get someone in that knows what they are doing.

edit: speeling

Actually... just a thought - Windows sometimes does funny things with root drives. Try sharing a specific folder instead, see if that makes a difference?

couple of things

Workgroup Name needs to be the same ideally - Windows 7 by default uses a different WG Name than XP

It sounds to me like you are using simple file sharing on the folders that work and are then trying to use advanced file sharing on the other folders.

Try change your network type to 'Work' rather than 'Home', alternatively change the settings under Home Network Profile to:
-Enable network discovery
-Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers

Add a password for your administrator account if you havent already.

Now try share - you will likely be asked for a username and password when connecting, enter the admin UN & PW

Tried that already with some sub folders inside my E and F drive, but still no joy.

Yes they are both the same.

Tried that too.

So you mean add a user and pword for my admin account on the win7 PC then try to connect from XP Laptop and enter the user and pword when prompted?

I haven't tried that one but will give it a go thanks?? I thought the simplest way would be to have user and pwords switched off, but hey its worth a try.

Ive tried everything in the links provided already except trying to map a network drive so will give that a go tonight.

Im starting to think what Cosmic Bertie said is right as I've noticed a lot of people with the same problem and most suggested solutions didn't work for others or me.

Makes sense that I can access the public users folder no problems but strange that I can access my external USB G drive but not the internal E and F drives, or my C drive.
