Grainfather structure question

Hey All

So I purchased a grainfather today and was wondering if someone who has one can help answer my question.

There seems to be a plastic insert close to the pump, thermowell. I'm unsure if its sitting correctly or if it's just packaging to remove? As it seems incorrect to have plastic inserted where I will be boiling water.

Before I go and f' everything up thought I would check if someone knows if I should use some brute force and rip it out? Or explain to me what it's for?
