If this is a stupid question, then shoot me. But as Ive only just started doing partials Im not up with the all lingo.

Send a mate to buy me some grain cause I couldnt go and he was going past the store. All good except that he didnt get me a couple of items and come back with some other grains which im not sure are what i asked for.

1. was told here wasnt anything called Wyerman Carafa Special II - does this go by another name? (doesnt seem to be on the G&G site)
2. as above for caramunich III
3. I asked for brewbooster and got a straight bag of maltodex (wtf!). what should brewbooster be (and yes I know that this particluar items falls into the K&K section - but the rest is partial)
4. crystal malt - I asked for cyrstal malt and light crystal. Got Bairds Crystal Pale and Crystal 65. Im thinking that Ive been given 2 sorts of light crystal. am I correct. will it make a big differance?
5. Im thinking I should have got my malts from Ross (cause its listed on his site) even though I have to fork out for postage.

any help appreciated

No.
No.
"Brew Booster" isn't a technical term, it's marketing hype, so it could contain anything they feel like throwing in.
Should be fine.
Yes you should have.

Cheers Tangent. Thats what I thought, Im putting together my order for Ross now as I forgot to get yeasts as well (hence the 3 empty fermentors :( :(

Here are my tips:

1. Ask the shop you bought from directly. They know their products. AHB forum users are less likely to.
2. Next time you get someone to pick stuff up, especially if they're a non-brewer, pre-order the stuff so all they have to do is pick up the purchase.
3. And if we're talking about G&G specifically, their postage to metro Melbourne is $6 or $9 (can't remember which) and that's for up to 30kg.

apd,
1. you haven't been to many brewshops around here then. They told him there isn't such a thing as caramunich III. That's funny, I'm a AHB member and I know I've got about 5kgs of it.
2. good idea
3. good price for postage - 25kg bag of malt for $6 or $9???

I'm not sure how man kg's it goes up to but yeah $6.70 seems to be the going rate to melbourne from G&G. I haven't ordered anything massively heavy from them, but in one order I got a 30l fermenter with a bunch of stuff including 5kg dme and the postage was still $6.70. Jump on www.auspost.com.au to work out shipping rate, they seem to abide by that guide.

1. I'm not saying the brewshop did or didn't screw up or that AHB members don't know their malts. My point is, instead of getting second hand info, you should go directly to the source. Obviously, caramunich III and carafa special II do exist but perhaps the brewshop didn't have any.

3. In metro Melbourne. I've had a fresh wort kit delivered for that price.

"AHB forum users are less likely to"."or that AHB members don't know their malts"
Reads like it to me.

"The source" Is that the guy who sells stuff, the guy who makes stuff or the guy who uses stuff?

Unfortunately, the source at a HBS is usually a bloke with little knowledge of AG brewing but he used to play footy with the guy who owns the place. At least here, some of the people are pro-brewers, some are AG fanatics, and unfortunately, some are "gospel fanatics" yet to actually do any series of AG brews but keen to spread "the word" because real beer has them excited. Even if they do know, or have done, SFA.

I really didnt mean to start an argument

Yes I know you shoudnt send a nonbrewer to do a man's work. I wont makke that mistake again.

Yes I could ring the store but figured my AHB brethern would give me a good answer as some LHBS are as tangent says 'guys with little knowledge'. (Not saying that all employees are like that just some).

Didnt know that G&G postage was that reasonable so thats good to know. Saves me a trip out there if I want something from them.

Anyway I guess the point is that my question has been answered, so thanks very much.

Now I know this is only a comparitive guide based on colour (and colour doesn't equal taste), but I've found the attached spreadsheet pretty handy for grain selection.

FWIW - it doesn't show Weyermann Carafa Special II, but I do know this exists, and is a dehusked choc malt. Weyermann make 3 varieties of it; Carafa Special I has a colour of ~300-340L, II is ~375-450L and IIIis ~490-560.

Making a Stone Epic clone?
