15 Forced council amalgamations in areas where ratepayers opposed them

Council amalgamations were actually in the Libs election platform. They abolished my local council and two others, and created a new one and appointed an administrator who still to this day runs the council. Who needs pesky elected mayors anyhow?. Anyway this administrator happens to be Bairds mate, who is also the former general manager of Westconnex (a new motorway that cuts through these three councils, which also happened to be vehemently opposed to the motorway as planned). What a coincidence!

The number of State government buildings sold, but kept quiet.......

Record stamp duty income obviously wasn't enough.

The whole council amalgamation isn't necessarily a bad thing (if done well).

They amalgamated a few shire councils in central NSW, and sacked the councillors and mayor as they were all pretty much crooked and self-serving, only allowing things through that benefitted them or their mates.

The council is currently run by an administrator and has never been more efficient. No more deals for mates, just good old fashioned needs based decision making.

I have to agree in a lot of respects

Up here there where about 500 little councils ( Ok...maybe 7-8 ) and they merged them all into Clarence valley Council. Was a bit of an obvious move as the old setup was just plain crazy. Grafton had a different council on each side of the river....was a nightmare back in the day to get things build as one side of the street had different planning rules

Mind you, the current council is ******* useless
