Just wondering if anyone can recommend some good all purpose gloves for brewing. Have tried the cheap ones from the supermarket - they tend to fall apart. Have looked at local Bunnings and they don't seem to have anything suitable.

Want something that is long going up the arm a little, can offer protection from chemicals up to Caustic Soda, and be used for processes requiring sanitation.

They don't have to handle heat, as I have material ones for that.

I have seen the Blichmann gloves, they seem good but do not appear to be readily available in Aus, and are quite expensive.

I have some nitrile gauntlets which are great.

I would also suggest nitrile if it's just chemical resistance you need. The ones we use at work are just standard gloves but if you can find gaunlet style as above, you'll be right.

Not cheap.

I got some heavy duty full arm length special rubber ones from a disposal store at Tingalpa in Queensland about 13 years ago, they're really great for sloshing around in everything in the brewery. Might be worthwhile checking out some of the Army Disposal places in your area.

The red coloured chemical gloves are what your after, but Bunninks dont have them.

Try Calstar or Eastland Trade

I can't swear to this, but going back to my childhood (and yes, Stu, I did have one of those), when we used caustic soda and aluminium milk bottle caps to make hydrogen balloons, I'm sure we just used mum's old fashioned washing up gloves. I see the supermarkets still sell them.

We never used any gloves when making hydrogen balloons....and I made a **** load of them over the years

We lived life on the edge in my childhood...

Any reputable plumbing supply outlet should be able to hook you up with some elbow length PVC jobs. The cotton lined double dipped ones are fairly comfortable, in expensive and tough as nails.
Helped me from getting **** under my fingernails for years.
The sex shop ones are rubbish by the way.

I disagree. Use a quality silicon based lubricant sanitiser and they will last for years.

Dont forget to trim and file your nails but.

I like those suggestions. After meeting the DucatiCrazy, it's obvious what the long term effects of caustic soda and aluminium without protection can do.

Looking at Matts avatar* he might want some green ones

*. Matt looks much sexier in real life than his avatar, according to antiphile after he had to much Guinness at the recent swap meet

I use (and love) the blichmann gloves. Great for cleaning brew gear (prevents starsan, hot water or pbw spoiling your manicure), squeezing Biab bags, or even reaching into the bottom of a pot boiling hot wort (gasp)

They're great. Mine are probably 4 or 5 years old now, and when they Cark it, I'll get some more.

You can get them here these days, Intel and a few others.
I imported mine from the us last time.

Intel... I mean ibrew.

iPhone auto typo insertion was a real pita on that post.

I got these and they eventually nick the outer and let moisture in, then mold grows. Realised about 4 months after the moisture ingress started, yuk :p probably more my fault than anything.

Ill be trying blichmann next. $25 aint that bad if they last 5 years?
Hmm, I noticed moisture in mine last Saturday, wonder if I have the same problem going on....... better check when I get home tonight. Blech. Those Blichmann ones do look nice though, available at Ibrew (no affiliation)

Yeah they started to crack on the rubber outer and eventually chipped away in pieces. Flipped the gloves inside out to dry and there was the mould spots :S
