I followed the thread a few months ago about Scharers George V Inn with interest, because many years ago I used to get a couple of cases brought up to Qld by someone who went through there every few months.
Back then there were no boutique brewers in Brisbane, and Scharers was one of the very few non-swill brews that I could get. I thought that both the lager and the bock were great. Then my travelling friend stopped going through Picton and my supply dried up.

A couple of years ago my kids organised a case of the lager and one of the bock for my birthday. After the effort they made to get them for me, I never told the kids this, but I was very disapointed in both brews. Didn't know if the brew had changed, or if I had been looking back with way too much nostalgia. I now believe that the original beers were as good as I remembered, and the later ones were inferior.

I may be driving from Qld to Vic sometime soon, and I'm thinking of calling in at the George V on the way. However it would involve a detour, and an extra overnight stop, so I would want it to be worth it.

Last I heard there seemed to be some hope that they might be able to get back to the good times again.

So, can anyone tell me the score at the moment, or at least fairly recently ???.

Cheers, Deegee.

P.S. I also saw a thread that said they may be selling fresh wort packs sometime soon - any news on that ?.

hi, you might find the reason on the website www.scharers.com.au

cheers, alan

Hi DeeGee -

As one who lives local to Picton I have had the opportunity of testing the George V beers out on a number of occasions. A number of casual and inpromtu M.A.L.E meetings have also been held in the Inn together with meets and greets of inter and intra-state AHB members who are 'passing through'.

The Scharers beers - Burragorang Bok, Scharers Lager and Wheat have had their ups and downs in the past but Marcus the brewer seems to have got things on an even keel and they are currently pretty good.

Please take the opportunity of dropping in on your way through and having a taste. Let us know when you will be in town and some of the locals like Pumpy, Linz, Franko and me etc. will be pleased to meet with you and have an ale. You won't be disappointed - ask Screwtop.

Cheers, Hoges.

I'll second and third that! Couldn't wish for a better bunch of brewers/brewettes to share beers with, do your self a favour DeeGee.

I dropped in there last weekend on a fly through trip and had both beers. I really struggled to drink the Lager.... The bock was pretty good though.

They apparently had a light on tap too but I didn't try that.

Well worth a drop in though. They put on a pretty good feed, just block out every picture you saw of their kitchen/food on the show....

Thanks for the replies folks, and for the invitation Hoges. At this stage it's about 50/50 whether I drive or fly. The main reason for driving is to stop off for a few days with one of my daughters in Newcastle, then call in on some other relatives in northen Victoria.
However my daughter may not be around when I'm planning to go - she's married to a pilot, and he's leaving the airforce soon, to fly for a commercial airline, so they may be moving at short notice. If that happens before my trip to Vic, I will probably fly to Melboune and borrow a car there to get around in.

If I do drive down, I will take your advice and your invitation, and plan to stop overnight in Picton. I didn't see the TV show n00ch, so I kind of wish you hadn't mentioned the kitchen.

It's good to hear the Scharers beers are back on track again - I remember thinking as I was downing my first pot of their lager, "now this is what beer should taste like".
Then when I cracked a bock I was surprised that such a strong dark beer could be so smooth.
It was a dangerous brew, tasted so good that you just had to have a another ..... and maybe just one more .... and then quite quickly the whole world got a bit blurry and unsteady ( couldn't have been me - I didn't have that many ). I don't remember any hangovers, but then it was a fair while ago.

Cheers, Deegee.

i was there 2 weekends ago i told my missus they had good meals there :p then when i turned up i said "wow they must brew there own beer" :D She knew it was a plan..

anyway the bock was awesome and strong and had a great feed as well, cant wait to call in again.

Couldnt bring myself to try the lager after i sampled the bock

Well, last weekend the bock was :icon_vomit: Terrible off flavour and aroma. Friends of our live now in Tahmoor and we went in for a few beers and lunch before the NRL final.

Food is great, especially the steak sandwich. We started with the lager which my mate (James Boags fan) quite enjoyed, it got a little sweet after a couple but had good flavour.

We stuck on the lager and bought a growler each of the lager and bock to take back to their place. We opened the growler of bock maybe 3 - 4 hours after leaving the pub, and all we got was strong sulfur and off flavour, like the yeast had been reused a few too many times. Even the Boags drinker found it off. It went down the sink.

Next time we head to the Inn we'll ask for a sample before buying.

The M.A.L.E. crowd is going down there again on Saturday 24th November @14:00...SO we'll do a review after...

anyone else who is around, drop us a note and we'll see you there

I live in Tahmoor and have been to the Geroge a bunch of times, I've tried their Scharer's Lager but I don't like it, it's too thick n fruity or something for my palate.

The crow on the weekend is always good to look at though, lots of bikers and hot rodders show up :D~

Today I noticed there's a new (? to me) brew shop in Campbelltown, on Campbelltown road near the Blaxland road exit. It said something about a microbrewery and fresh, chemical free beer.

Oooh yet to open I see!! *rubs hands together*

I'll trot along to the MALE meet as well if I'm knocking round town :D
