G'day all, first post.
I got my first infection today and now I know that strong vinegar smell. I thought it was strange that my gravity reading was 1.025 after 11 days, I tried to force another ferment with a sample but would not budge.
Got home from work today and noticed the lid on the fermenter had a gap in it - it would not sit flush, I worked out that when I twist the FV in the fridge so the tap does not hit the door it caused the bad fitting lid. The gap was easily big enough for the fruit flys to crawl in. Which I found out are also known as vinegar flys.
I am just going to ditch both FV's and have got two new ones now and doing a full sanitize of my brew gear.
There is possibly other causes, but this lid was practically open and thought I would give a heads up to anyone with a coopers FV.
Anyway cheers for all the top info on this site.
Mick.

If fruit flies have gotten in then you've got yourself an acetobacter infection.

Yeah, they are always around, gotta be quick and keep everything closed.
