Hi guys,
I've just had a disappointing ferment
with my AG Newcastle Brown Ale clone. I need to get into yeast starters and was wondering where others had acquired their lab flasks (Erlenmeyer) from?

Geoff.

Find a uni student studying science - get them to 'borrow' one for you from their lab classes (chem or bio) ..... I had several of these for...other purposes many moons ago and didnt realise how much they cost until i saw them selling at my HBS.

I could 'borrow' one from my lab at work but not needed. I make my starters in a longneck, bit of gladwrap and a rubber band. And I'm a scientist! Scary but true :p

There is really no need for specialised glassware - just use whatever shaped bottles/jars you have in the house. As long as you sanitise them thoroughly you will have no dramas.

Cheers

If you are looking to buy specialised glassware ie flasks, culture botles, test tubes or the like then Livingstone's are worth a look at.

Easy to register & get their catalogue & prices on line. They carry a very extensive range.

No affiliation with them etc etc but quite worth a look.

Cheers,

Stout

You don't need erlenmeyers really unless you are using a stir plate.

A combination of a small 600mL coke bottle and 2L coke bottle will work fine, you can step it up from the 600mL first to the 2L for larger batches. I've used one of those 4L water bottles as well for a 3L starter that was stepped up from a 500mL bottle, and it fermented a lager at 8C, pitched at 8C in 8 days, with krausen at about 12 hours.

But try livingstone as stoutdrinker recommends. Postage is a bit exy if you're outside Sydney though, but the flasks are quite cheap - 1L is about $5.50. Their site is a bit funny, put in "FLKEC" into the search box to bring up the Bomex erlenmeyers.

Another source (with delivery is ProSciTech). I emailed them a while back, asking whether they deal with the public direct and the replay came back happily in the affirmative.

A $10 shipping fee applies. 1ltr flasks are around $12.

I use sanitised 650ml/1.25ltr coke bottles for my starters, with a grommet and airlock added to the normal bottle cap (just drill a hole). I currently have about 1 litre of Wyeast 1968 (London ESB) bubbling away for pitching tonight.

*edit: forgot the link...

I was in Clark rubber the other day and found they had quite a range of rubber stoppers of the kind used with lab glass.

Also grommets, insulation foam and many other things I was certain I could use in the brewery. But that hapens to be nearly everywhere I go nowdays *sigh*

No Affiliation etc but if its closer than your LHBS, a good source for sure

Got mine from G&G in Melbourne. 2lt job for about $25. I've got a Newcastle brown in the fermenter right now.

Hi Razz,
I used John Palmer's Oak Butt Brown Ale as a base recipe. Is your Newcastle Brown along the same lines?
Have you made it before?

Hi Geoff. It's the AG recipe from Northern Brewers website. This is the second time around, it's a great drop !
You wouldn't have a link to that recipe would you. I can't find it.

I got a 2L one from livingstones (www.livingstone.com.au) - works out better for postage if you are ordering a bunch of them though ...

Evening Charlie, was yours shipped from Sydney. I ordered another last week and didn't bother to check where it was coming from.

I got mine from ProSciTech.com. Delivered in a couple of days. $45 for 2 500ml and 1 1l flask.

Just received a carton by courier, yipeee :D Opened it up and the stir bar pickup stick is there but the 5lt flask is on back order. Bugger ! :(

Shouldn't this thread be under "gear & equipment" :)

Cheers Ross

Same thing happened when I ordered from Livingstone. A hasty phonecall confirmed I wouldnt be charged freight for the backorder delivery.

I ordered a few flasks (1lt, 2lt & 3lt) & a couple of stir bars.

From memory it was the 3lt flask I waited on & took a week or so to come in.
