Hi Guys'n'gals'
i've been offered a great oppurtunity to live and work in Dubai for 6 months to 3 years. I could be gone in as little as 2 weeks
Of course the money offered (tax free) makes it all worth while.
They are also now in the midst of sorting out a partner package for my girlfriend.. annoyingly she will probably earn more than me <_<

So who has been to Dubai...?
My research tells me that you need a permit/licence to drink and purchase alcohol.
So i want to know whats on offer in terms of beer range and pubs/clubs.?
Kilkenny and Heiniken seems to be mentioned often.... yawn
Also from what i can figure out, the ability to buy a 6 pack and drink in your own home is limited if non existant.

So let me have it... i need some reassurance.

Cheers

Dubai is in the United Arab Emirates for anyone interested, and it is a state that is obsessed with attracting foreign businessmen. So, alcohol is not illegal, like it is in neighbouring Saudi Arabia. However, expect it to be expensive... Here are the beers in the region I know about-

Egyptian beer 'stella' is all right; tastes a bit crownish

Carlsberg is made in the region under license

I don't think you can get Israeli beer... for obvious reasons.

Hope this helps

Cheers P&C
From what i've read a pint of Kilkenny works out to be about $7 so that puts it at the same prices i pay here in sydney.

I had the opportunatey to work in (well near) Dubai a few years ago .. I spent around 5 months there.

There are no "pubs" as such, some of the bigger hotels have a bar but you pay the the ar%e for anything. It is pretty much all imported and mainly american mega-swill .. but when there is nothing else you get what you can.

Check out the gold souk .. I have never seen anything like it

According to lonely planet-

abra ride Dh0.50
newspaper Dh2.00
fresh juice cocktail Dh4.00
street shwarma Dh4.00
coffee Dh10.00
beer at a five-star hotel Dh20.00
movie ticket Dh30.00
CD from Virgin Megastore Dh50.00
round of golf (18 holes) Dh300.00
three-star room Dh350.00

I don't know the exchange; you're probably right about how much it is for a beer. but, I just heard that stuff is expensive over there- correct me if I'm wrong.

Do it while you are young and can KoNG.
There is a bit of a run down on the nightlife on this site too

Beers,
Doc

im my humble opinion if you are earning tax free dollars ( us ?) then a seemingly high cost of beer and other items would hardly be an issue.

cheers

ahh thanx Doc,
Thats the site i found which mentioned 18Dh for a pint, it seems there is quite the expat pub scene, so it may not be all that bad.
exchange rate is around 2.8Dh to the $.

as far as i know, you have to work over 12 months to make the most of the tax free dollars.
that said, the cost of a beer isnt my main concern.. its more the availability and the range etc.
@ $7 for a pint (same as sydney CBD essentially) but earning 4-5 times the money it shouldnt be a problem. :D

:D but think of all the catching up you will do on your return kong.beer will have never tasted sooo good.

cheers

Dubai is a great place to travel to Europe from. If you are there long enough earning 4-5 times your Aussie income, then fly to Praha for a week off every few months. Problem solved. Probably no direct flight to Praha from Dubai might have to go via Vienna. Its only a few hours drive from Vienna to Praha. Nice country side, plenty of spa towns, good golf courses, & a few breweries along the way. Octoberfest, fly direct to Munich! Drink heaps, get a t-shirt then back to Dubai!
Cheers

Great website Gerard...!
yep i'm already thinking world cup and other european adventures.!
after some more research, it seems getting the permit allows you to purchase alcohol from the windowless bottleshops...! pffeeeewww :D

i doubt anything like making your own alcohol would be tolerated, i guess you have to get caught first. But deportation is like a traffic ticket i've heard, any small crime can send you packing.

All brewing equipment and stock will be held tightly under lock and key, for atleast the first 6 months. if things turn into the 3 year contract... i may sell everything and then on my return.. jump on the net and visit "morebeer".... :p

May be there next year Kong.....have had an oppurtunity to work with Nakheel.....on the Lost City & Dubai Waterfront project

Cheers
JSB

how will you find the city jsb if its lost. :D

Kong,

I travel to Dubai at leat once a year & have relatives there - Drop us a pm if you make the move & I'll give you the contact...

It's a great place to visit - wouldn't want to live there personally - But a country full of opportunity at the moment - My nieces husband went there on holiday a couple of years ago & has never looked back. More wealth than I'll ever achieve...

Go & experience - An opportunity not to miss :) ...

Cheers Ross...

Just don't forget to remind the mates that no porn in the emails as all internet is cencered. My mate that is there at the moment has a wife in Tyland and he can't evan look up the local phone book to book dinner as some of the names in the book are blocked. But good money by all accounts.

Derrick

hmmm,
the porn thing could be an issue... my mates would probably send it just to try and get me in trouble.!!!

Ross
i'll drop you a mail soon when i know more as our contracts are due soon. thanks mate.

JSB.. on all accounts i will be working on similar projects being developed in Oman, so i will be travelling quite a bit, although my work is environment based.

Should be fun and there is great surf in Oman - Yemen around July..!!! :D
