After looking at all these fancy brew stands, shiny stainless stuff, pumps, filters etc it made me wonder, is the beer actually better at the end than those made in rather more basic setups.

I only have a simple kettle made from 2 stainless pots soldered together, a mash tun that is a 26ltr esky and sparging that is done with a jug and a pot of boiling water.

I have no doubt that bling will make life quicker and/or easier, but is the beeer actually better at the end of the day compared to my trusty old setup built around plastic milk crates and bricks...

I don't think it makes any difference in most ways, its really the brewer who makes the beer. You can have some brewer with every little bell and whistle possible and still not beable to make anywhere near as good beer as someone with a pot on the stove and so forth.
I have personally tasted great beers made by a good brewer in his kitchen and have tasted undrinkable beers made by a brewer who has everything.

Think of brewing as the process not the set of gear you have to somehow make work, if you have the process right then great beer can be made with things you have already lying around the house.

Boozed, broozed and broken boned.

i have a great amount of respect for people who brew with no matter what, nothing stops them brewing, instead of making excuses for not brewing.
For those about to brew :beerbang: we salute you :super:

I'm with Jayse. To put it another way, do you think having a flashy car makes somebody a good driver?

Bling may look good, impress your mates, may get you there a bit quicker, more easily or more comfortably. But at the end of the day, it's the brewer that does the thinking.

(It may be I think this way partly because my setup is as basic as yours sounds, DucatiboyStu. )

Ditto to all of the above.....dont worry Duc Stu - if you like the beer you are producing then thats what counts.

Cheers

You could have $100k+ ultra hip industrial kitchen installed at home... but it makes no difference if you only know how to crack an egg into a whitewings spongecake mixture.
Knowledge of ingredients and process is probably more where its at.

Paradoxically, if i could have a B3 system delivered tomorrow..

Its nice to look at, but at the end of the day its about the beer. If you can make good beer from a plastic bucket and a thermos then thats all you need.. :)

Function over form most cases, obvious exception is chicks :)

Yep. Don't need it. Heck I don't even have a pump.

3 Tiers presents no worries. The only way I'd have one (a March pump) would be if it made the brewday shorter and created an equal beer... I don't think so. ;)

My gear is OK now. OTOH I survived with couple of buck's worth of ghetto gear for around 8 years.

All that being said I'd never begrudge anybody making their brewery as nice as they wish... Only shows they have pride in what they do. :)

I honestly don't think my beers are that much better now than when I used my old 100% plastic brewery back at the start. And if the beer is better now, as KoNG said, its most likely due to a better understanding of the ingredients and the process, rather than the materials/aesthetics of the brewery itself.

In fact, I am thinking of re-instating my old plastic setup up at my folks' place in the country. Their water is much better for english ales than Sydney water. Should be fun for a bit of an experiment! Its a strange thing, the old slapped together breweries always seem to have something that the bling doesn't. "Character" is probably the word I'm looking for...

Beat me to it about the pump :p as for bling, it's the as for motorbikes " Chrome don't get you home" :D

I guess also that the more bling you have, the more you have to clean...... B)

probably no difference at all me thinks :)

I am still doing extract and fresh wort at the moment, and use an aluminium pot to boil in. My wife, friends and myself think that the beer is great. When I finally get to try doing an AG it won't be in anything special, but i bet.. or at least hope.. it will taste great. :)
Eric :beerbang:
still waiting to try an AG

Yes Bling tastes better no doubt , I love my Bling bitter and my Bling brown ale , my Bling brewery although Frankos is more Blingyer.

Why cuz when I did not have the Bling I did not have the experience I have now and the refinements that have come along with the Bling .

That is why Bling Bling brewing and Bling beer is best .

Eeehhhxcellent! I'm a kitchen stove-top brewer.
Sounds like all my dreams are coming to fruition.
Brew great beer and get rich and famous, buy out CUB and Lion Nathan(sp?) and shut down all their sh!tty breweries.
Mwaaaahahahaha
