As an aside, with judicious use of an angle grinder (sounds like a dentist) you can free the barb and fitting from the otherwise useless ends you chop off the braided "quick fit" hoses.
I haven't pressed one into use yet but it seals nicely even when only hand tight. I am not so sure about the rubber washer in there but I figure it is for hot/cold drinking water so it should be reasonably safe and heat resistant.
