In a Gas fired BIAB system, do I still need a "false-bottom" ie cake/pizza tray etc to keep the bag off of the bottom?

If i put the bag in at mash temp, will the bottom of the pot be hot enough to scorch the bag?

I guess i'm also limiting myself to absolutely no mash out temp raises without a false bottom....

any advice? cheers

I gas biab and have no falsie. Just remember at any time you want to add heat you need to stir or lift the bag a bit. I stir. I can heat from 66c up to 78c and as long as I stir I get no scorching of the bag.

I use a wire cake rack at the bottom. Probably not necessary, but gives me peace of mind when raising the temp to mashout.

so you don't bother lifting the bag with this mate?

i'm looking to find one similar that fits my pot (yours looks perfect) so i don't have to worry about lifting a heavy-ass bag of grain for mash out.

wbosher, where's that rack from? looks a bit bling for my ghetto system!

I may take to a pizza tray (theres 6-8 in the cupboard) with a cutting disc or a drill...

That's correct, no need to lift the bag. The tray is the same diameter as my pot so it's perfect. I think from memory it was about $15.

Sorry can't remember, bought it online. I think if you just Google "cake cooling rack" something will come up.

Edit: Here you go

I hoist the bag and secure off using a cleat (all from bunnings) for mashout

leaves me with 2 free hands to adjust heat, stir, smoke, drink

I think it was Thirsty Boy who put up a really good post about mashing out with BIAB, strongly recommending that you stir constantly while raising to 78ish, then raise/drain the bag.

This is what I do now, takes about 10 minutes on my system.

i'm guessing they're stainless steel? i used to use an upside down vegetable steamer, until i saw rust on it and thought better of it. just saw one from a shop near me called chef's warehouse (surry hills), and it was juuuuuuuuuust too big to fit inside my pot. it was only about $7. they couldn't confirm what it was made of but i'm sure you could ask the manufacturer

I do this too, never had scorching.

Yeah, as I said probably not necessary, but gives me peace of mind. I don't mind paying $15 for that :)
