Hi,

Apologies for cross-posting but my recipe question didn't seem to get answered in another thread I started.

I'm about to attempt my first AG brew.

I plan on brewing a very simple pale ale using pale malt and a specialty malt to give it more of a caramel flavour (which I like). As this is my first attempt at AG, and I'm doing the boil on a stovetop, I thought I'd try a "half-batch" of approximately 12 litres. I have 20g of Goldings and 20g of Northern Brewer hops left over from a recent extract brew so I'd like to use those if possible.

I'd be interested to hear some suggested basic pale ale recipes (remember I'm aiming for about 12 litres) using the hops I already have (if possible) and nothing fancy in case it all goes pear-shaped!

Cheers,

Chris

2.5-3kg Pale malt
200g crystal (Carared, Med crystal or the likes)
use the NB for bittering and save the EKG for another brew
15g of either Cascade, Amarillo, Centenial, Citra at 20 mins, and another 15g at flameout
Dry hop if you like
ferment with either Wyeast 1056 or 1272, or just use Safale US-05

It's a good style to brew first up, APA's are quite easy and very very tasty

Or you could use the northern brewer earlyand the EKG late and make a more English style pale ale, as in the OP you never specified what kind of pale ale. Then if dried yeasts are your thing you could use Nottingham, or there are several liquid yeasts that would suit just fine! As for grain 95% base, 5% spec is a nice simple way to start!

Northern Brewer is a great bittering hop. Use that for bittering (60 min boil) and the EKG for flavour and aroma (10 min boil).

Thanks, I'll probably aim for an English style although I'll be happy with anything that resembles "beer" :D
