As a die hard Aussie cricket supporter I reckon we can beat the Poms. How we do it I'm not sure. Young blood or old stage's?

How will the series pan out?
Daz

Of course we can beat the poms Daz. Not to sure about Katich though..........

Squad: Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke (vc), Simon Katich, Shane Watson, Mike Hussey, Marcus North, Brad Haddin, Xavier Doherty, Steve Smith, Mitchell Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus, Peter Siddle, Doug Bollinger.

Going on our recent form (or lack thereof) it would seem unlikely. But I still have hope.

read somewhere that VB will shout every aussie a beer if we win it.

Did they consult bookies before offering this ?

as much as i hate to say it i think our chances are 3 fifths of **** all.until hilditch gets the arse and selecters start looking out side of nsw for players we are going to continue going backwards.first move though would be sack ponting as captain and let him concentrate on batting. and instead of bringing back out of form players all the time let some of the young fellas have a shot.

Mmmm.... Hughes and Hauritz missed out and Bollinger in. Not a fan of Bollinger, Doherty or North but this is their chance to shine so maybe I'm wrong.
Of the older brigade they're all overdue to fire on the big stage and put it together as a team.
Ponting has to fire or this will be his last series and I think he will. Hussey could be hitting form. If he can continue on from last week he could have a good summer. Clarke is the mystery bag. He could do anything. With home crowd support he may raise a level with all the attention he likes to spur him on. The others are hit or miss from day to day with the bat. As for the ball I like Johnson and Hilfy, especially at the Gabba and although Siddle is fearsome I'm not a huge fan. We need to wrap up the tail in close games. Something that has'nt been happening for a long time. So late change or part time bowlers to get those last stubborn wickets maybe the key to success.

Just my thoughts for now. Whats yours?
Daz

north is a duck or a ton and nothing in between, ponting is past it and the bowling, not one average below thirty, my money is on a 2-1 loss and a return to the bad old days. And yes hilditch is as big a dud as he was as a player.

Yep, mostly agree there Marksfish. North, more ducks than tons coming I think. Ponting is at crisis point. If he is sacked as captain, which wont happen till after this series, he is finished. He wont be a specialist batsman he'll be gone.
Hilditch should have been turfed years ago. I can't recall the dramas from a year or two ago concerning Hilditch He should have been sacked but passed the blame to others and kept his position . (I'll go back and find that ref .) He's a tool! If things on that front can't get any worse they have now appointed Greg bloody Chapel with some token job for the boys oversee-er at the expense of old Merv.

While I'm at it, who gets pissed off at the dribble his brother spews forth ? Usually some half arsed attempt at psychological workings of a players state of mind at any split second silent moment when he needs something to say in commentary. Give me Richie & Bill any day.

IN AN unprecedented giveaway, VB has pledged to "Shout the Nation" if the Aussies win the series.

Every adult will be eligible to receive a free 375ml can or stubby with complimentary tokens to be found in the Herald Sun.

As a major sponsor of the team, VB is hoping the entire nation will toast victory if Australia wins the series.

The promotion will be announced in Sydney today, with Ponting and teammates Doug Bollinger and Simon Katich on hand to witness the signing of the pledge.

VB production, already in full swing to meet Christmas demand, has been stepped up to operate around-the-clock to ensure there will be sufficient supplies to shout every adult in the country.

VB brand manager Craig Maclean said the Ashes series was one of the most important for Aussie cricket in decades.

"Australia's favourite beer is backing Australia's favourite team to come up trumps this summer," Mr Maclean said.

The "Shout the Nation" initiative will include a commemorative card to promote responsible drinking.

Australians will be reminded to "Know When To Declare" when it comes to their drinking.

The Herald Sun will join other News Ltd papers to publish the tokens in January.

It will be possible to redeem the tokens at participating Liquorland, 1st Choice and Vintage Cellars outlets.

The promotion is available only to Australians over the age of 18, and only one voucher per person is redeemable.

Australia yesterday named a 17-man squad for the First Test starting in Brisbane on November 25. The final Test starts in Sydney on January 3.

come on Aussie, come on

In the Herald Sun... so it' won't be the nation that'll get a free beer.

from what I read To get the coupon you need to buy a copy of The Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun, Courier Mail or the Advertiser on the 8th of Jan or the Sunday Times on the 9th of Jan and cut the coupon out. ( any of the Major News Ltd Papers)

Take that and your arse to Liquorland, Vintage Cellars or 1st Choice and get a freebie stubby or tinnie.

As a pom I`m looking forward to the series. Although we are looking good we are always capable of self destruction

Michael Clarke averages 58 in Australia. I expect him to make runs and will be betting accordingly.

Smith won't get a game until Sydney, and might not even then.

Hussey will hopefully get some runs. I like the guy and enjoy watching him bat.

Watson and Katich have been very good at the top of the order. If the English quicks don't make early breakthroughs and they get off to a start, we could be in for a great summer.

Ponting makes bad decisions as captain. Test cricket is about taking 20 wickets. He is too hasty sending the field out to protect runs and give the single to the recognised batsmen. How about backing your bowlers to take wickets? He may struggle with the bat too.

Johnson could prove his worth as a legitimate all-rounder this summer.

Bollinger has taken 49 wickets at 23.8 in 11 tests. I love him as a bowler and he should get a bag in Brisbane. Especially if England bat first.

I think we win the series. The poms have been making a lot of runs on this tour, and the tour games will help them. But I think we have the potential to roll them a few times pretty cheaply. Our batting at times appears fragile too. But I'm backing Clarke and Huss to resurrect a few innings after top order collapses.

Australia 3-1 with Melbourne washed out.

... Australia 3-1 with Melbourne washed out.

we got to get a few days played in Brisbane too or else that's odds on the draw.

This tour England has come prepared, unlike the last tour. They are as strong as they can be. On the other hand, we are uncertain, lots of blokes out of form, carrying a few old blokes and with a predestrian looking bowling attack. On paper, we haven't a chance.

My prediction - will crush those pommy bastards. 3 - 1 with Brisbane a draw due to weather. They will win the insignificant fifth dead rubber.

You better be wrong - or me and 90000 odd people on the first day are coming to look for you. This will be my second boxing day test, the last one was a doozy - Warne 700, Symonds 100 with a 6. Stirring up the Army - Johny Walker Trivia question - "Who was the last amateur captain for England - answer by my mate - "Freddy Flintoff" - the poms didn't like his answer, but I think he was right.
Can't see too many people lining up to be the next test captain, don't think Clarke will cut it as a captain. Still it will probably be Punters last Ashes. You can't knock him too much, just look at what happened last time all our greats retired, couldn't beat an egg - so with the loss of Warne, ooh ahh, Gilly, Langer and Symonds, I think he has done O.K.

Couldn't agree with you more. Think pointing definitely gets the rough end of the stick. You cant lose two of the greatest bowlers of all time and expect to maintain that standard, especially when the blokes filling their spots are so inexperienced.

I'm sick of the selectors and their 'faith'. North could make 9 ducks in a row but in the tenth inning score a ton, and he'd be safe for another 5 tests, while a guy like brad hodge is scoring hundreds every week, his last inning was a double ton, and its safe to say he'll never get selected again.

I say it's time to blood some youth. I was wrapped when hughes was selected for south Africa and think he got the axe way too quickly in the last ashes, I just want some new guys who I can look forward to, instead of waiting for the demise of the older blokes.

Aussies to win 2-1 but it'll be a stressful series and i may have no home brews left by the end of it.
