Hey, just wondering if anybody has ever had their font replated with either brass or chrome?
I picked up a font on ebay for a decent price but the gold plating is pretty worn.
I'm just wondering if it's worthwhile trying to get it replated. Anybody got any idea what it would cost? Or is it just cheaper to buy a new font.

Also, and this is a long shot, I just finished replacing all the lines in the font. While doing so I had one of the compression nuts that pushes the collet up against the bulkhead to seal, shatter into a million pieces while tightening. Anybody got any old spares they want to sell? I will try Andale but they are notoriously pricey and I don't know if they stock these, I don't think the new fonts have these. The font I have is pretty old.
I'll take a photo in a sec.

Mate,
I can highly recommend this place. It won't cost you too much. I used to work near by and their work and prices are tops. I have had alloy (motorcycle parts) chrome plated, and some things gold plated as well. Cost less than you will expect. (it has been some years now though)
I know they do work for people all over the country.

Sorry to head off the rails so early, but where do you guys get your new / used fonts? ive been searching on ebay and the likes for ages and have only come across poor condition items at rediculous $$. Or what appears to be the same old plated cheap chinese stuff.

I already have a keg setup, but i plan on upgrading soon. I plan on either T-shaped or U-shaped and minimum of 4 taps.

I have not ruled out manufacturing my own custom one as yet.

If anyone can help out or has suggestions im all ears!

Cheers

your a champ mate.

Drop in for a beer if your passing by one day mate, its been a while

Thanks Schooey. Might look into something more local.
If it costs more than $150 it's really not worth it. I'll just buy another one and sell the one I've got.

Anybody know if it's cheaper/more expensive to get stuff plated with brass?

Mct,

Sorry slipped the first time, damn kids. What are the Taps made of. Brass itself is really easy to plate with nickel/chrome. I work in the Aluminium plating industry, but dont do gold. If desperate PM me about Nickel /chrome.

Regards Tony

Hi mate, I'm really just looking to restore the effect of the font I have which is pictured above. I'm not sure what it's plated with or if you can get that effect with nickel.
I'm thinking I might just make it all chrome, then it will match the taps I'm using. Although the gold/brass looks cool and matches the federation font.

Good question though, anyone know what the Andale fonts are made of? Not just the font frame itself, but the end caps and dress pieces? Also, anyone know what the D.A. taps are made of? I might get certain parts of them done at the same time if possible.

I'm a bit of a retard when it comes to metal, it's all just metal as far as I'm concerned! What can/can't you electroplate?

Mct,
Brass, copper, steel are easily prepared with a acid pickle to activate the surface, prior to up to three nickel coatings and chrome , mainly for corrosion protection in the Automotive trade.Gold plating has acual gold suspended in the solution and therefore is quite expensive. It cost approx 3k per liter for the make up solution. As far a metals go, it would be like explaning all the differences in brewing. The above mentioned Platers have a exellent name in the M/Cycle trade. i will ask our suppliers for a reasonable price for this job and let you know for comparisions.

That would be excellent mate, thanks.

I don't really want it to be plated with gold, just to restore that gold look on it.

Some of the parts I have, end caps and dress pieces, are cracked and a little worn just incase that effects the plating. I will take some better photo's and PM you.

Much appreciated! :icon_cheers:
