Hi all,

Me and a mate are heading to melbourne on monday (to see the gods of grind, carcass on monday night, and meshuggah on wednesday).

will be staying at the Victoria Hotel on little collins st, so nice and central.

just wondering if there are any good pubs that serve decent beer close by, and any decent bottle-o's that sell decent beers (coming from tassie, the selection is, for lack of a better term, piss poor).

dont suppose anyone else is checking either of these gigs out?

cheers

just missed out on tickets unfortunately :D

however in the CBD you'll be hard pushed to not find something on every street corner, not necessarily selling good beer but there are heaps that do..

You don't have to walk far!

James Squire Brewhouse - corner Little Collins and Russell Streets.

You can get beer there that is actually darker than 4 EBC... Oh, and they actually use hops too :)

Try the parma, they put bacon on top :)

Victoria Hotel is just down from the James Squire's Tavern/Portland Hotel. That would be his closest for a quality ale. No bottleshop there, but if you do searches on it on AHB you'll find most of the folk here reckon its pretty good.

Also on Little Collins St up the hill from them is European Beer Cafe (cnr or Exhibition & Lt Collins) which has a fair range of german & belgian brews, Then further up a grungy bar called Pony with live music and more standard beers, then the Irish Pub Bridie O'Reilleys - that has your Guinness, Kilkenny, Boddingtons and the like on tap.

Cookie and Rooftop Bar are both great places for a beer. Both these places are at 252 Swanston St on different floors but are great if you're into something different. Rooftop bar is on level 6 and serves Erdinger on tap amongst others and has plenty of hot young things, and awesome views of the city at night. Cookie has a slightly older crowd, and is just one floor up the steps but has an excellent range of tap beers and bottled brews. Cookie has food too, but you can wait a while to get a table.

Your mate's closest bottleshop is the Exmouth Hotel on Russell St. Corner of Little Bourke and Russell St (same street that chinatown is on) Believe there is one open also a few doors up but keeps mostly regular trading hours - not open as late. Young & Jackson's Hotel on corner of Swanston and Flinders is your next closest bottle-o. Used to be one at Carlton Hotel on Bourke St but has since closed (was a bit of a bloodhouse so just as well), that would have been the closest to Victoria Hotel.

He's in a great spot, and if he walks in any direction he's gonna find heaps of good stuff - the hotel is actually opposite two good bars - The Hairy Canary and Gin Palace, although their prices are on the steep side.

+1 for the Squire's Brewhouse... their cob pie is exceptional - as much as I love a parma, I am hard pressed to go past that bad boy.

Young & Jackson's (cnr Flinders and Swanston sts) is also good for a selection - Mt Goat on tap and their own Naked Ale.

They are two of my fav CBD stops...

If you can't find any good bottle shops in the city centre, a cab ride to Cloudwine cellars should only set you back $10 or so. They've got an excellent selection of beers and are worth a visit.

Grain and Grape usually have a good selection too, although they are a little further out (~$15? cab ride each way). At least you can check out some homebrew goods whilst you're there.

Purvis Cellars are supposed to be good as well, although I'm not sure how much it would cost you to get there.

Another +1 for James Squire/Portland Hotel. One of my favourites, they have some beers brewed on site that aren't sold outside the pub.

I can definately say that Purvis cellars is worth the trip, it's close to a tram line but they have one of the most amazing beer selections I've seen. A bit of a hike from the CBD, but if you've got nothing else to do, it's worth it.

And for all the talk of Parmas, don't forget Mrs. Parmas at 25 Little Bourke Street:

They specialise in Victorian microbrewed beers and guess what....parmas. :D

There's plenty of choice,

James

For decent prices and a shorter trip, your cheapest option for bottleshop booze in the CBD would be Safeway Liquor in the QV building. Left that one out.

This is on the corner of Russell and Lonsdale Sts. The supermarket is in the basement of this big mall that's situated there. There used to be a Dan Murphy's in this building but it's closed now (was on top floor I think). Safeway owns Dan Murphy's so you will get similar prices and reasonable range there.

Agree with the lads though, Purvis is amazing. Quite a trek though for a bottle - up to 50 minutes on a tram I'd have thought, but worth it if you're looking for something schmick to take back to Tassie and impress your mates.

yeah, more interested in good bottleshops, not cheap macrolager specialists, got plenty of them around here :p

looks like its at least a stop to the james squire brewhouse, thats on the way to both carcass and meshugga, so might stop there for tea on the way ;)

European Beer Cafe also sounds like it might be a worthwhile stop.

problem is going to be dragging my mate to them, hes a macrolager fan, no matter how much i try. most exotic thing hes into is tooheys old :(

would love to stop at Bridie O'Reilleys, used to be a great pub in hobart named Bridie O'Reilleys, but it got bought out and turned crap. used to have a great beer selection (something like 25 on tap), down to less than 10 now :( all just as boring as each other.

could wine could even be a stop, just to get a few rare takeaways to bring home. after some nice belgians (rochefort, orval etc) and maybe some lambics and a couple nice english.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far! keep up the great tips

LC Dining Hall on Brunswick Street is good. A quick tram ride on the #112.

Transport at Fed Square. More beers than you can poke a stick at.

St Arnou brewpub on Little Collins St.

Andrew

In terms of decent bottle shops, there is a vintage cellars just down Lt Bourke St from the Exford Hotel. Its between Swanston and Russell Streets. It has a pretty decent range and I have managed to pick up a fair few nice beers from there

any reason why noone has suggested the belgian beer cafe on 557 St Kilda Rd?

thinking of checking it out, only 500m away.

the young and jacksons was pretty awesome, went there yesterday.

-1 Jame Squire Brewhouse...

Belgian beer cafe is alright, a bit of a sterile atmosphere like transport, good deep fried mussels from what I remember, I believe it has a northerly aspect which may be good on a sunny day.
