Over the weekend i made the Following Brew:

2kg of Light Dry Malt Extract
1kg of Dry Wheat Extraxt
250grms Crystal malt
20 grms Amarillo at 60 Min
15grms Amarillo at 10 min
15grms Amarillo at 5 min

Made to 20 Litres

It has a Starting Gravity of 1070, Which i thought was a bit high? Does anyone else think that is high?

It looks OK if you made it up to 18 Litres.

Cheers, Pete

Yeah it looks a bit high for a 20L batch but not much higher. You should of ended up with an OG of about 1063. The higher hydrometer reading might have something to do the temp of the wort when it was taken, I think most are calibrated for fluid around the 18C - 20C mark.

As long as your warning people not to drive after a few of them I don't see an issue with it either way

Dave :)

All of my Amarillo ales normally start at around 1.050 so yes I would think 1.070 is quite high.

By my calculation (beersmith) you should have got an OG of 1.057 for 20L.

I suspect you took the gravity reading at more than 20C.

FWIW my golden ales (amarillo) have an OG of 1.047. Session beers.

The wort be less than 20 deg to get a higher SG reading wouldn't it ?.

When I'm taking SG's of mash temp wort, the reading is always lower than the actual SG & I use BeerSmith to correct it for me.
