As many people are mashing and using the "No Chill method" of storing the wort

And probably split 40 litre wort batches in to two twenty litre wort batches.

I propose that people wishing too, could swap 20 litre wort batches with others wishing to do the same on the forum .

Like me I am getting a few batches of fresh wort kits in storage

People could post that they have an American Amber ale and looking for a Brown ale

if anyone interested they contact each other.I suppose it could happen on a local basis

Some people who had too much of a grain could mash double batches and swap the wort !!!

It would give people an opportunity to taste brews that they would not mash themseves .

Is this a good idea????

Pumpy :)

I think that's a great idea pumpy. But there's not too many AG'ers up this way... Would be a good way of trying beers that you don't have the skillz to make yet..

Fixa there are only a few mashers in our little club around the MacArthur area I know what you mean .

if Franko woud stop polishing his brewstand and start up those burners it would be one extra .

Ploishing nearly complete pumpy.
I look foward to the wort swap and go program you have come up with.

Onya Franko,

Thats a good name "Wort Swap & Go"

Its a way to get more different styles on tap and network with other 'Brewing Brethren'

Sounds good Pumpy!!!

Count me in, once I'm up and running (which hopefully won't be too far away)

Cheers,
Jase

Jase ,

I will have to increase the taps on my beer fridge from two to four

I could give this a go Pumpy, as you know I'm not that far from your place.

Hope you like hops though

Yep Duff

I am even happy to agree on a recipe to mash and then swap

Hi Pumpy,

top idea. would you consider interest from those outside the MALE fraternity eg the ISB'ers?

What about other cube sizes? eg the commercial 15L fresh wort containers could become the defacto standard as there are many other shape & size drums available. The 15l ones hold about 17.5 l anyway :beerbang:

I think that is a good idea perhaps some sort of inventory system so that people can keep up to date on them would be good.

The ESB size ones are good, might be an idea to bulk buy a few of these puppies http://www.cospak.com.au/productdetails.asp?ProductID=10945

Bulk a few different swaps together and i'll load up the X-trail for a couple of swaps between ISB and MALE ;)

I bought half a dozen of those "20L" cubes. They actually hold a couple litres more than 20, so take that into account in your recipe. They have a $100 minium purchase from the Minto showroom, too, tho when I was there they didn't have $100 worth of cubes in stock...

Not sure what the price for those are from Cospak, but I have a local hospitality shop that sells them for $6.50 each.

The handiest part about them is they stack neatly on top of eachother. They lock together in a Lego-ish kind of way.

They were somewhere between $6 and $8 at Cospak.

Crozdog ,

Of course .

the idea may only appeal to those mashers who are doing 40 litre plus batches

Any craft brewers groups can do it

The advantages are mainly increase the range of beer styles you have on offer by swapping wort batches with others .

I notice that some mashers brew a similar style of brews due to thier grain they have and probably specialise in certain styles .

Whilst one can reccomend the yeast one normally brews uses for the style
some brewers may have a range of yeasts they may wish to try in your style of say American Amber ale .

There are obvious efficiencies for people in they can mash less for more styles of beer , I like mashing but there are times for all of us when other commitments dominate our hobby .

Another point is I find the larger the batch you mash in the better the efficiencies this could be Psychological .

Croz dog ,I have no problem in mashing for 15 litre cubes most of mine are 20 litre it would be nice to have an agreed standard size .

If you had say four people and they did two 40 litre batches they could do like a Christmas case of Fresh wort kits and one would end up with four different styles

If you are interested in some 15lt casks, either new or 2nd hand, drop me an email. At least that way you don't have to buy a heap.

Pumpy :)

But then you have to drink your way thru 15-20 litres of beer you "may or may not" like...

..in the chrissy case its only a 750ml bottle if you dont like it

I'm keen, but agree that there should be a standard size container.

Boozy, Love the name! :super:

Pumpy, I agree that you get better efficiency with larger batches. I think it might have something to do with having a bigger grain bed depth, but that's just a theory. :)

Linz, it's the same risk as if you mash a new brew yourself that you haven't tried, you might like it or you may not. Seeing as the cube recipient gets to choose the yeast & control fermentation, you still have some control over the taste of the final product.
