I've found filtering air to be a waste of time. I used to happily splash pour the chilled wort into the fermenter, and top up with tap water and never had an infection in the last 11 years of brewing...So why do I need to go berserk and buy all sorts of stuff, now that the aquarium pump is pushing the same air down a tube?
I agree that you need to have a sniff of the airpump to make sure that it doesn't push foul smelling air into the fermenter, but really, I don't see how a filter will help, unless you are brewing in a dusty area. Perhaps I'm lucky because I brew and store beer in my cellar under the house?
I have a 0.5 micron stainless stone - it's great for carbonating kegs...
