I am about to do my full mash Amber Ale which I would normally use willamette hops in along with some perle for bittering and also Tettnang but no willamette are available. I was thinkin that I would use ahtanum hops instead but have never heard of them before now (yep I have been out of the loop for a while)

Anyone used them and can you give me a low down on them. I mainly want them for aroma and will put one addition 20 mins into the boil and another at turn off.

I used it a couple of years back in a few brews, by itself and with Amarillo and Cascade. From my notes, it's very similar to cascade, but I didn't like it as much on its own, but was good with the amarillo. Notes don't say why, but from memory I think I found it a tad more woody than cascade. Use it just like you would cascade.

I tried them when they were first available in Aus and I found them similar to what Nick R has described.

i used them at 60 mins on their own then a flavour addition and found them to be woody and fruity and they seem to leave a dusty taste as well.
I cant comment on aroma as I didnt add any at flameout.
They may be different when not used for bittering.
Needless to say I havent bought any more of them. I would use cascade any day compared to Ahtanum but this is only my opinion.
BTW the beer was a pale ale and I was given the hops to try.

My 'house' amber uses warrior and ahtanum. I love the citrus the ahtanum provides against the caramel malt flavours. Like Nick says, similar to cascade but I get more mandarine/orange notes and less grapefruit. My last version used 1.5g/L additions of ahtanum at 10, 5, flameout and in the whirlpool (15min after flameout) but this was no chilled. I chill now and would adjust the timing to 20, 10, 0 and hopback but probably keep the hopping rate the same (or increase it - my lupulone threshold has increased much :D ). Also dry hopped with ahtanum. OG 1.057. I like my amber ales big and bold.
 
if your using this for bittering i can't comment!
used them about six months ago in an amber
from memory in a 20litre batch used 20g 10 min boil then 20g dry hopped after fermentation
was hoping for a nice tangerine hop flavour/aroma to come through but it had a weird strong musky kinda of aroma and flavour very strange,wasn't very good, it put me off doing any more ambers for a while
found a few bottles about a month ago, it now has a rose petal perfume aroma
, the amber beer itself was really nice, still unsure of the end result, didn't quite go together
i prefer a combo of Amarillo and cascade for hop aroma/flavour in my ambers

i'm thinking of trying it in a pale ale to try and get the tangerine flavour that it supposedly has to come through in a beer
