Hey all has anyone seen these, or is anyone using one? i'm concerned about the preset electronic thermostat control but thought that for the money i could replace the electronic unit with a variable type to get a greater control over the urns temp?

Thoughts, comments, experiences greatly appreciated, Jet

What's your planned use for the urn jetman?

I think these are mentioned in the e-bay thread.

I planned on doing BIAB AG brews in it instead of on the stove, (currently restricted by 19L pot) and i thought i might make up a strainer to sit in the top so i can hoist the grain bag, chuck it on the strainer then sparge.

I got one of these and it lasted 6 months until the elements died. IIRC BjornJ got one, it broke and the guy fixed it for no cost, then it went again soon after. If I had my time again I'd go straight to a Birko (or crown), which I ended up getting anyway.

If you want a cheap short term option you could do it.

Did you have any issues with it cutting out? I might get one to use as a kettle but I know there can be problems with he urn switching itself off.

Yeah, thats why i asked. - i dont think these things are much good for BIAB

a} they are too small to do BIAB that is going to be really much easier for you than using your 19L pot. A 40L pot is the minimum useful size for the easiest form of BIAB. OK, if you insist on doing BIAB that is harder than it has to be, then you can get away with a 30L pot, but its not something i would ever recommend.

b} they just dont seem robust enough for the extra duty they are asked to do in boiling wort for BIAB. Urns aren't built to be boilers, its just that the high quality units that people are using seem to be able to manage the job - these seem to not be of the same standard.

You could probably use one nicely as a (slightly on the small side) HLT in a multi vessel set-up, but for BIAB - there are much much better choices out there. More expensive, but also much more suitable.

No problems with cutting out. It gave a really vigorous, consistent boil, right up to the point the elements fried.
