Grainfather - Counterflow into kettle first and then into fermenter

Hi everyone, Just bought a grainfather and it specifically says to NOT recirc the wort back into the kettle. However, my tap water is 28C so I want to pre-chill with ice water to get the wort down to 18C or so. I'm thinking of recirc wort through counterflow and back into kettle to get the...

    Earthing kettle element

I asked this question in a different thread and thought I should probably just start a new one to avoid getting OT on the other thread. Firstly, I understand the importance of earthing electrical equipment and having all work carried out and signed off by a licensed electrician. My query...

    Tapking bottle inner lining

G'day everyone, I've been refilling tapking bottles for a couple of months now. Just finished a bottle and have found that there is an inner lining that has filled up with the slurry from the bottom of the bottle. Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea what I can do about it? Cheers

Force carbonating in tap king bottles.

G'day AHBers I've started to force carb my tap king bottles using the method where you set the pressure and leave for a few days in tbe fridge. I considered the crank and shake method (as I was running low) but was hesitant as I doubt the bottles could stand the pressure. Does anyone else...

    Sodastream adapter

Apologies if this has been asked but can anyone confirm if there are 2 different adapters for the 2 different sodastream cylinders. I have a 60L cylinder and some sites advertise their adapters as being suitable for the 40L cylinder only. Cheers

    No Chill In The Kettle

G'day ahb'ers I've used the NC method a few times with good result. Firstly, to clarify, my approach was to rack to a cube to cool overnight/2 days and then rack to fermenter to aerate. It occured to me before making the last brew (Light lager/24IBU) that I should just leave it in the kettle to...

    Refractometer Query

G'day All, I know we're all beer brewers here but I'm having a technical problem I'm hoping for some help with. I've started making wine at work.... before we get carried away, I work at a High School...and it's part of the course. :P Anyhow, we made a red wine with an O.G. of 1.094 and...

    Increase Boil Length?

G'day Apart from wort darkening, what problem would I have increasing the boil length to deal with low efficiency. I'm still trying to nail down my technique and have brewed with efficiencies from 40% - 60% with the same gear. I've planned on 40L at 60% and boil down to 36L for a O.G. of...

G'day all, Threw together a partial the other day using a bucket in bucket mash tun and about 2.5kg of grain. Mashed at 63 C for an hour. Electric Breweryland

I'm keen to try boiling 25L of wort in a fermenter with either an immersion heater or an element inserted into the fermenter. My questions are: 1. Is it possible to boil 22L of partial mash wort to make a 47L batch. The O.G. of the wort will be around 1.080. Is this too high? Will it scorch? I...

    Copper In Beer?

I figure there is probably minimal risk, but i'm wondering about leaching copper during the mashing stage. I'm thinking of rolling up some copper mesh as a screen, which will create a greater surface area than a copper manifold. Anyone think this will be a problem? Cheers
