    Have I stuffed the starter?

Had my first go at splitting a Wyeast tonight and I think I made a simple but significant boo boo. Got my 500ml/50g starter ready and my sterile specimen jars. Poured 25ml into the starter and then proceeded to split rest into vials......hold on....the liquid is sludgier now than the yeast...

    Skin formed on cider......?

Hi all Got 10l of cider in the fermenter - been there for four weeks. Just checked it tonight for the first time in a week or so and noticed a whitish skin has formed over the top. Little jiggle of the fermenter sees the skin split. panic?

First go at splitting a smack pack....info overload=confusion

Purchased a wyeast 1272 American II and thought I'd have a go at splitting the pack to get better bang for buck. Heaps of good info on the forum but this can some time be disadvantageous - so many subtle variants on how to do it and I end up a confused blithering mess in thee corner....I'm a...

Am I being too impatient (thirsty)

Had my latest batch of DSGA carbing in bottled for two weeks now and thought I'd crack a couple open (for the sake of science!). Very happy with the taste and whilst carbonation has occurred - not as much as I'd thought and little (no!) head. Is it just a matter of time or have I made a boo boo...

    Crazy low FG....?

Into the second week of fermenting the coopers clone on the recipe database. 18l stovetop BIAB. brew day went off well and starting gravity was bang on the money. Took a sample tonight and dipped the hydrometer in - 1.004! Recipe sees FG at 1.012. Big difference! The sample was heavily...

    Mango cider?

Anyone ever done a mango cider? Scoured the net and found a bit of info but nothing definitive or more importantly, information of how the end product turned out flavour wise. No point doing it if you can't maintain the mango flavours........ Recipes? Thoughts? Ideas? Chris

    Think I've stuffed my cider.....

Put down my first cider on Tuesday - 5l of store bought juice mixed with 5l of fresh squeezed juice. Noticed today some white spots sitting on top of Juice foam which was created as a result of juicing the fresh fruit. Could it be mould? I have a sneaking feeling. Took a couple of dodgy...

    Sunken hop sock....doh!

Hi guys Dry hopped for the first time and went to pull the sock out today and realised its sunk to the bottom of the fermenter. Was in the process of starting cold conditioning. So what should I do. Rack to another fermenter and then cold condition? How do I avoid this for the next time...

Hi all Putting together my STC1000 box and went scrounging around the shed to see what I had and came across a double GPO. Most set ups I've seen use two single plugs......any reason I couldn't use this double? Chris

Is galaxy a viable alternative to Amarillo as dry hop in Dr Smurtos GA

Topic title sums it up.......I'm out of Amarillo and have some Galaxy.......workable? While you're all listening. I'm not doing a secondary so will dry into primary. Docs recipe calls for 2 weeks in secondary. So should I dry hop for two weeks or (as I have read some people do), dry hop with...

    Temp dilemma - panic!

Hi guys Put down Docs Bavarian Weizen last night and now I've chucked it into the fermenter ready to pitch the Danstar Munich but in my haste I tipped it from the pot (20 litre stovetop) into the fermenter and didn't realise the temp of the wort is still around 25 degrees.....it's been 38 here...

Why Is My Fg So Low?

Put down a Parched as Bro Pale Ale on Friday night.....pretty pleased how it went for a second ever AG BIAB. Temps all went well and OG came out at 1050 (temp adjusted). Pitched the Nottingham on top of the wort and it went gangbusters - churning away something frantic. Three days into the...

Weird Smell Of 'sick' When Sanitising Fermenter!

Went to sanitise my fermenter today to preparing for bulk priming tomorrow. Fermenter has been sitting idle in a closed cupboard for a few years now as this is my first brew in very long time. Poured the powder in the fermenter and then added water. As soon as I added water a very strong smell...

Chuck It In The Fridge......yes Or No?

Hi all 3 weeks into fermenting my first BIAB DSGA (17L). Everything seems to be travelling well and I intend to bottle this weekend. I've just acquired a fridge but as yet have no STC1000 or the likes. I was wondering whether its worth me cranking the fridge to its lowest setting and sit the...

Converting A Commercial Beer Keg For Biab?

Hi all Can possibly get hold of a couple of cheap commercial beer kegs. Am I right in thinking you can just chop the top off one of these and then use it as a kettle to boil for BIAB? If so, anything I should be aware of/look out for etc etc. Had a quick look around for info for this but most...
