Hi all, i know its best to use boiled DME for a yeast starter, but what trouble would it cause if you woke up some dried yeast with a teaspoon of sugar and 1/2 a cup of boiled water the day before you are planning to pitch....

No real need to do a starter with a dry yeast. Rehydrating it in (preferably) boiled water is enough really. There are instructions on the manufacturers' websites for the major brands. Which yeast is it?

Should just clarify the above, that's COOLED boiled water (or bottled water like I use). Dropping the yeasties into boiling water will do them in!

Cheers

Very true. Should have made that clear.

What temperature water to use varies between different yeast companies. Fermentis directions for Safale etc here.

Uh-oh...the debate has started again

That would be the cooled versus boiling water for yeast hydration debate :p

That's pretty easy isn't it - you only use boiling water if you want to kill your yeast for the local wild varieties to feed on ;) .
