Actually it is an E clip

Circlips are generally internal spring clips that sit inside a groove in a tube.

Eclips are used on external rods with an external groove

Eclips are easy to get off, just put a small flat blade screwdriver in the open section and twist it and hold your finger behind it to stop it flying around

They are a prick to put back on....

Get a cheap pair of off set needle nosed pliers. That way you can steady it with your free fingers and squeeze it home with the pliers.
Also, coat the clip with hi viz luminescent paint so you can recover it when it inevitably rockets away at the speed of light.
Prepare to say '****' heaps.

Yeah, I should have painted the one that made a successful bid for freedom last night. ****** if I know where it is. Off to Supercheap or Repco this weekend then. On a brighter note, the hand pump went back together nicely, it's very shiny now and I think it might work even better (in that it should work). Got some plumping to replace but that's about it.
