What's the shaky stuff in the Cask Widge?

I just took delivery of two Cask Widges and gas dip tubes.

On shaking the end that sits in the beer, it sounds like a Maraca (Cue Dean Martin).
I assume that whatever it is, it's in the sealed off floater part of the device, ballast maybe, and not likely to come in contact with the beer?

Nah, just shot pellets or similar ballast, doesn't come in contact with the beer. Although, one of my early widges fell apart and littered them everywhere, thankfully just on the floor, not in a cornie. Won't hurt to check its secure.
 
You are supposed to float it, not test it to destruction.
