Just need a little help with finding the right style for putting this recipe into beersmith. It's basically a Tooheys old clone.

Recipe as follows;

JWM Pilsner malt 4.2 kg
JWM Munich malt 1.13 kg
carafa II malt 0.45 kg
Wheat malt 0.28 kg
Chocolate malt 0.12 kg
Crystal malt 120L 0.12 kg

Hops;
Nugget 25 g 9.8% a/a 60 mins
Cluster 23g 6.6% a/a 45 mins

Nottingham British ale yeast

Est. OG 1055 @ 73% efficiency for 23 litre
Est. Ibu 32
Est. colour 31.5 SRM

The only dark ales I've found on beersmith are big Belgians, so if any one could steer me in the right style direction, it would be appreciated.

When I tried an 'Old' style in Beer Tools it fitted into the Robust Porter.

Cheers Geoffi, 15A Robust Porter fits well. Thanks.

Good Day
IMHO the recipe is more for a porter than a toohey's old. If you halved the dark grains and the bitterness you would be closer to the mark.
However it looks like it would be a good porter. :beer:

Thanks Barry, I have made it before and while having similar flavours to an old, it left old in the shade. I just call it a dark ale. Perhaps I need to change it to a Porter. Cheers

Of course, this does beg the question: does a Toohey's Old really fit into any 'recognised' style, or is it a style on its own? Why should it be shoehorned into a 'style'.

For a self-styled 'beer-drinking' country, Australia has bugger all genuine styles. Cooper's is responsible for most of the ones I can think of. Maybe Old is up there too.

To follow on from Geoffi, is it possible to "create" a style or do they need to be BJCP?

Perhaps it is just opening a tin of worms!

Well these things weren't laid down in stone by Beerhova. Every 'style' had to start somewhere. APA as a style can't be more than, what, about 25 years old?

CSA and TO have been around for a hell of a lot longer that APA. Why aren't they 'styles'. (Answers own question: because all this stuff has been worked out by our friends across the pond...)

Rise up, my beer brethren, and reclaim the great brewing traditions of our southern land from the crimes of the megaswill fiends and the ignorance of the Seppos!

What worms ;) just do it, I have, I just put in the year I did them and deleted the BJCP [so the Bloody Judges Can't Play]

I thought Tooheys Old might pass as a Schwartzbeir, not that I've knowingly had a schwartzbeir. I hear they use a lager yeast for this beer.

so the BJCP doesn't have have anything to do with blow jobs? Whew! You guys had me worried going to all those "classes" late at night :)

I had the same thought. When I realised it was an all-male affair I found I had other appointments...
