I'm brewing at around 5% because I thought these beers were easier to brew than low alcohol. After tasting Ross's 3% and glancing through this thread, I see heaps of people are doing low alcohol brews. I'm aiming at a 3% crisp, fresh, hoppy, European lager - surely this is the hardest thing you can possibly brew?.

Can any of you guys doing the 3% beers send me a PM with recipes and advice?

You'll be doing all on AHB a real favour as the length of my average post drops by 1000 words per 1% drop in A.B.V. (LOL Doglet!)

I like beers between 3.4 - 4.5%. I enjoy them much more, and i can drink more of them!!. I dont mind going up to 5%, but my usual bitters are right on 4%. I made a summer bitter that was 3.4%, and it was great, soooo drinkable, but, it wasn't bland at all, and had good character.

I agree. There's nothing wrong with a beer in the low 4% range, as long as it has flavour. Mind you, my last brew was a Helles Bock @ 7.5% and I have the ability to turbocharge any glass on the fly if needed (thanks for that Ethanol 96BG.! )

While mine range to about 7 and as low as 3 I looked at my brewing spreadsheet and put an average on the ones since I started recording the various 'Gs and they came out at an average of 4.5%...

So, normal sort of strength for Australian heavies it would seem. The milds have balanced the Bocks and IPAs...

My pale ales are generally 4.5% to 5% and stouts and porters a bit higher - 5.5% to 6.5%.

I would like to make a lower alcohol beer, around the 3.5% mark. My only attempt at this was an English Ordinary Bitter but it turned out a bit bland and watery. Can someone point me to an AG recipe for a low alcohol ale? Style of beer is not important - I'll drink anything. Well almost anything; not paint thinner or Tooheys Red.

Check the recipe section for an English Dark Mild. There are a couple of recipes in there, one of which I'm pretty certain is all grain.
Edit: Here they are...

This is a great style lower alcohol beer in my book.

Thanks Dude. I'll try the St Peters Brewery Mild.

Actually it doesn't have to be a AG recipe. Partials or extract based recipes are easy to convert to an AG equivalent.
