Here's a recipe I'm going to attempt tomorrow afternoon.

Any feedback would be appreciated, I'm after a darkish, full bodied beer with roasted malt & chocolate overtones....

Grain/Extract/Sugar

% Amount Name Origin Potential SRM
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
87.0 5.00 kg. JWM Traditional Ale Malt Australia 1.038 3
8.7 0.50 kg. Weyermann Pale Wheat Germany 1.038 2
1.7 0.10 kg. JWM Chocolate Malt Australia 1.032 381
1.7 0.10 kg. JWM Crystal 140 Australia 1.035 74
0.9 0.05 kg. JWM Roast Barley Australia 1.036 711

Potential represented as SG per pound per gallon.

Hops

Amount Name Form Alpha IBU Boil Time
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
30.00 g. Fuggle Pellet 5.00 20.5 60 min.
15.00 g. Goldings - E.K. Pellet 4.75 1.9 10 min.
24.95 g. Goldings - E.K. Pellet 4.75 2.7 5 min.

Total IBU is only ~ 25, maybe I should use Amarillo or even Chinook to get the IBU up to the 35 - 45 mark?

Thoughts anyone?

Looks a little Scottish to me! But it depends on the batch size and the yeast you're using though.

You could throw in a handful more hops and it should be fine for a bronzish ESB.

it's going to be a 23L batch, yeast will be a standard wyeast 1056 for the first batch.

what type of hops would you increase?

Hugh

Southern English brown ale

the IBUs are 18 - 25

You could put more Crystal in up to 250 gms would be nice ,

Just the right amount of Roast Barley

otherwise you have a great recipe !!

I love brown ale its a Great winter beer

Dont put in the Amarillo or Chinook you may spoil it .

you are on the money with the Fuggles and Goldings .
