hey guys,

i'm going on a house boat weekend with the boys down the tweed river in late november this year and since i have purchased a couple of corny kegs i'm keen to take them on the houseboat this year.

I want a few recipies, preferably mid-strength (as its an all-weekend eat, fish and sink piss-a-thon) very easy drinking and thirst quenching beer that will have my commercial beer drinking buds in awe.

Im thinking of doing a dr smurtos golden ale again (as im really loving that beer!) but its up the higher end of the ABV scale where i want to be around 2.5-3.5%.

I also have had a look around the recipie DB but nothing has really got my attention.

would like to keep it to ales - light in colour, as i have well and truly gone off lagers and really dark beers at the moment.

just adjust the fermentables in the Smurto brew...

Or... drumroll...

partigyle!

One keg to irritate and stimulate during the day, and the other keg to tranquilize at night... all from the same grain...

If you were going on the Murray I'd say work with the theme of the river anything dark, murky and hard to swallow. Seriously I'd suggest you brew what you like to drink the most, nothing worst then being on a houseboat surrounded by beers your not that interested in.

There is a Little Creatures Bright Ale (LCBA) clone in the recipe database (I think by Tony) and it is a ball tearer. None of my relo's are into "Homebrew" but they always smash this beer.

Mid strength ? I'm an old fart and I'd neck myself if I was stuck on a houseboat with mid for a week ... oh the humanity

Seriously though, I'd hit em with an all grain Carlton Crown Mid style along the lines of:

4000 Pale Pilsener
300 Carapils

Mash 66 degrees 60 mins

20g POR flowers 60 mins
20g Euro Saaz 10 mins

A good Wyeast lager like Danish or Urquell.

Lager for at least a month till it's clean as a whistle :icon_cheers: :icon_cheers:
Remember that we are well accustomed to hops, as home brewers. But give most of the other sheep a glass of anything that has more than 20g of bitterers in it and all they can taste is bitter.

Being a regular to mannum atleast twice a year in my younger, mexican days :( anything that even resembled the murray water would make me.... :icon_vomit: . LOL

Yes, the dry yeast S-189 makes a great lighter tasting lager and doesn't need to be constantly nursed at 12 degrees, you can do it low to mid ale temps and it does well. Also the hops, you could sneak in a bit of USA hops - maybe 15g of something like Cascade, or a NZ hop like Motueka or NZ Cascade. But not too much if the guys aren't accustomed to craft beers / home brew. Maybe hop up the second keg a bit more - sneaky - :icon_cheers:
