sorry if this has been posted before, I couldn't find anything though

When I was at the gully, I saw that they had a 3 tap font- one with Coopers Pale, one with another beer (can't remember) and another one with the temp guage showing that they are serving at -0.5C (I think it was Tooheys New, not sure). I asked the bartender how one font can serve at two different temperatures, because the Pale I bought was clearly not that low. She replied with 'I don't know, I just pour it' <_<

So... how is this done?

They have a beer pump under the bar; the beer is constantly looping back through the ice bank or glycol system.

So instead of going through 1 coil then siting in the lines, the beer is constantly being chilled, when a beer is drawn more enters the loop through a non return valve.

I do exactly the same on my font at home - 2 of my brews go through s/s coils submerged in a glycol machine & are served icey cold, whereas the others are at whatever temp my fridge is set at.

cheers Ross

Ross I strongly suspect that you have missed the point; this is something relatively new at least round here. This isnt a standard ice bank arrangement.

Tooheys are marketing a "Super Cold" version of their Draught; it is served between -1 and 0C. The beer goes through the coil in the ice bank, and then is pumped in a constant loop circuit from the ice bank to the tap then back through a second coil in the ice bank using a beer pump.

As beer(?) is sold more flows from the cellar through the first coil, where it is chilled, then into the loop were it is recirculated and kept at ice bank temperatures.

They even have a sexy blue digital temp redout on the font badge to tell you exactly how flavourless the beer will be.

This is not something that would appeal to anyone making good beer, but given the product in question - it makes it almost drinkable - if you hurry.

yeah, I noticed the blue readout- that's how I knew it was -0.5C. Looks really impressive, I've got to say. I have seen the commercials- "it's a pom's worst nightmare" (well timed for the ashes).

That system makes sense on how it will work- still won't drink it though

Yeah, but she was a looker, so I think the bloke who owns the pub didn't ask any questions beyond 'will you wear this?' :p
