Hi all,

never used Tomahawk (Columbus) before, but i have 500g of it in my keezer, and want to get stuck into it.

According to the data on Columbus, it's an excellent bitterer with a good aroma profile too. Spicy, earthy etc....

Beersmith describes it as a clean bittering hop.

Have come up with this recipe, aiming at a hoppy APA in the ballpark of matching OG-IBU's, but as i said, never used it before.

Those that have, would you mind giving your opinion on if this recipe looks alright?

Cheers n beers

BN

Oh, and i'm a dirty filthy no chiller.....so the additions will really be 40, 10 and cube hop.

hey Nath,
I've worked my way through a 500g bag of this also and had differing results. It can be quite a harsh bitterness from it but it generally settles down after about a month in the keg. The best results are from FWH and more toward the aroma addition. I would scrap the 30min addition and add it all to the cube or dry hop. It has a fairly resinous flavour that goes well toward the IPA style. I'm by no means an expert with this hop though so as always experimenting is the key.

So if I left all quantities the same but shifted 60 min to fwh, 30 min to cube and cube hop to dry hop or combine both into the cube... How do you reckon that would go?

Righto, so how's this look?

Moved 60min to FWH, 30min is now a cube hop represented by the 20min calculation, and cube hop previously is now dry hop..

I would also taste before dry hopping to see what you have going on in there, then dry hop if required.

Further to this? Did you do this one Nath, if so how did it go?

I sent him a PM about this a couple of weeks ago Yob. He didn't get around to it :( I was interested about this hop as well.

Hey yob,

Rowy is right. I didn't brew the recipe in this thread.

What I did do though is do it as a 100% cube hopped beer. Results are promising. It's conditioning while I'm away for Christmas New Years. Should have more to report in a week, but initially I'm getting a lovely floral aroma and taste that reminds me of roses. Super nice.

I'll keep you posted.

Nath. my last APA was bittered with hallertau (because i wanted to get rid of it). flavour/aroma was from:
10g ea of amarillo & colombus @ 10 & 0 min.

After a taste test on day 12 I dry hopped with 25g of colombus then left for 7 days before kegging.

Very nice. previous brew was bittered with colombus & was ok but I think i prefer it for finishing.

Righto, update time:

This beer is really nice. Havent checked to see if it lines up with bjcp, but it bears all the characteristics of a decent APA.

Recipe was:

OG approx 1042

21lt batch

90% BB Ale malt
5% carapils
5% munich 1

44 IBU's of Columbus (Tomahawk) as a single cube hop addition.

US05 for two weeks at 17deg, week and a half at 1deg.

Lovely floral (roses) flavour/aroma. Slightly piney, decent amount of perceived bitterness. Its really drinking well.

Am going to re-brew it for Tanunda show after ive checked its suitability and adjusted for the APA category.

Well I've decided that I don't like this hop at all, I've got a bit if anyone wants it. Yours for the postage.

Back to my old Cascade thanks.

Batz

Have you only bought it from one source, Batz?

I decided the same thing with Hops Direct 2009 Centenial - never again. Now I'm thinking it was the source, not the variety.

I like columbus, one of my favorite hops. Dank, resinous, nice rough bitterness which is good depending on what style you are going for.

That said, I like to mix it with hops like centennial that are less resinous, so as to not overdo it.
